I need to replace the nut on my 4 string Peavey Foundation. I called Peavey, and was very disapointed in the fact that they really had no idea if it is a flat bottom nut, or if the slot was cut to the neck radius. I haven't taken the old one out yet, but looking on the net, I cant find a pre-slotted flat bottom nut, in 1 1/2 inch. There are alot of sources for curved bottom ones for a jazz bass, but they don't have the same radius as a Peavey. Peavey's are an 8 inch radius. I want to have both on hand when I start the job. Any idea's out there?

Peavey sent me a new nut for my Fury without so much as a question. They don't have them anymore? If not, I can go find mine and send you a picture and the dimensions; I think it's the same specs as the Foundation.

Thanks Ducatiman. Though they don't have on either, I have decided to just take the 5 string Peavey one that they do make, and trim down the B side to the proper length. Should work fine, and is a flat bottom. Damn, that guy at Peavey. I'm going to call and bitch about his advise , for sure. I'm an old biker, and over the years, have owned, a Mountaineer100, a 160 pushrod motored bike, a DianaMkIII 250, and a Sebring 350. Never had one of the twins, but I was under 21 when I had all those Ducati's. I hillclimbed for 30 years, but thats another forum. Thanks! Joe

re: peavey service , you just got the wrong parts person on the line. i'm sure they'd have the correct nut, no? i'd call back & make sure you get someone else to try to look it up for you.

i recently replaced nut on a schecter 5 string. NO choices for a drop in ANYWHERE . took an oversized blank, sliced, diced shaped and slotted it myself. worked out ok.

gotta be inventive when the need arises.

Joe, did you ever actually find a replacement nut, or did you just stick with the 5 string one, like you stated? I ask b/c I just got an old Foundation in trade, and the nuts all dorked up, so I'm currently seeking a replacement myself.

Your local brick and mortar should be the first source for parts. If you follow the link in a post above to Stewart-MacDonald you will see an Economy Nut Assortment. These are pre-slotted nuts in different configurations. Obviously no one wants to spend $42.00 and have 107 nuts left over just to replace a single nut on one guitar. But music stores and repair shops buy kits like this one to service their inventories and accommodate customers just like you. If they don't have it, suggest it to them. Similar kits and single pieces are available from the jobbers and suppliers they deal with every week.

thanks for the info 202dy... i have purchased a couple dozen nuts in the past, but wanted to know what joe got to work because i am dealing with the exact same bass. FWIW the brick and mortar places around me do not stock ANY bass nuts, but thanks for the help.

It's not worth much. And it's ridiculous. Every store in this area (excepting the piano dealers) has one of those boxes under the counter. It makes good dollars and sense for them while doing everyone else a huge favor. They pay forty bucks for one and sell it for roughly two hundred.

Won't they get the kit if you ask them?
