VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Favorite NEW rock bassist?
punkbass479 01-06-2007, 11:53 PM my vote is chris wolstenholme of muse. he has a good groove. his basslines show that he know his place in the band. he did a couple like 'hysteria' and 'butterflies & hurricanes' (featuring a bass-tapping intro) to prove he was a great player. he can do anything from a crazy shred bassline to a simple meoldy line.
so let's hear your nominees.
p.s.
don't vote for yourselves or friends from unsigned bands, just guys from big bands. also someone who came about in recent years. anyway, i'm looking forward to the feedback.
SuperSnake2012 01-07-2007, 12:38 AM I was gonna say Chris too before I loaded the thread. One of the best bassists out there today, his lines are always awesome and I love his tone. :bassist:
perfektspace6 01-07-2007, 02:17 AM the guy from tool. Justin what's his name.
PiratEV15 01-07-2007, 03:09 AM those are two very good choices, i'm a big fan of chris....
i'm gonna go out on a limb on this next one but how about Juan Alderete? of coarse i may just be listening to "Day of the Baphomets" way too much... opinions?
The BurgerMeister 01-07-2007, 03:39 AM all great votes!
i'll vote for Jared Warren from BIG BUSINESS.
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=13717050
listen! (not the best sound quality, but whatchagonnadoo....)
honorable mentions: the dude from Placebo, the dude from Kings of Leon, and the dude from Tegan & Sara. awesome skillz, awesome tones. Pure Rock.
How new does new have to be to be new enough?
Robert DeLeo IMO, he plays in a new rock band (Army of Anyone), although I'm a fan of his work in STP.
SirCanealot 01-07-2007, 06:33 AM the guy from tool. Justin what's his name.
Err... he's like 40 now :P
Remember Tool release an album every 5 years, heh.
Yeah, I was going to say Chris too. He's just a beast of a player with an excellent head and tone. I loves him :)
pdusen 01-07-2007, 06:41 AM the guy from tool. Justin what's his name.
+1
Justin Chancellor, aka the second coming of Christ.
Just look at him. And then look at a drawing of Jesus.
It's not a coincidence!
Baryonyx 01-07-2007, 09:51 AM I suppose Justin Chancellor, but he's hardly new. For that, I might as well say Billy Sheehan or Geddy Lee!
ARCtrooper225 01-07-2007, 09:51 AM Well, the title "best anything" is kind of meaningless, but my favorite today has to be Ryan Martinie, but Chris is pretty cool too.
pdusen 01-07-2007, 11:07 AM I suppose Justin Chancellor, but he's hardly new. For that, I might as well say Billy Sheehan or Geddy Lee!
I consider anything 90s or newer relatively new... If we extended that back about 20 years I would say Geddy.
perfektspace6 01-07-2007, 01:39 PM Yeah I guess Justin Chancellor is pretty old. Kind of sad that is the best I can think of. How about the guy from Alien Ant Farm? Although I don't think they put an album out after the singer was injured/sick (?).
Embryodead 01-07-2007, 02:13 PM Yeah I guess Justin Chancellor is pretty old. Kind of sad that is the best I can think of. How about the guy from Alien Ant Farm? Although I don't think they put an album out after the singer was injured/sick (?).
Nah they did put out an album, but yeah he's actually really good too.
Goose72 01-07-2007, 02:19 PM Chris #2 from Anti-Flag, i cant find his last name anywhere, they always refer to him as Chris #2 or just #2.
or Chris Ross from Wolfmother
just my $0.02
arbitrary 01-07-2007, 02:39 PM Yeah I guess Justin Chancellor is pretty old. Kind of sad that is the best I can think of. How about the guy from Alien Ant Farm? Although I don't think they put an album out after the singer was injured/sick (?).
That man from AAF, Tye Zamorra, is a beast. But hes not with the band anymore. The only orig. members are the drummer and singer now.
j-bass-kreep 01-07-2007, 02:58 PM I hate the new album and they have been around for more than 10 years I'm talking about AFI and their bass player hunter, , the guy can really play ( check out sacrifice theory) and has a great tone .
Amitio 01-07-2007, 03:08 PM Totally agree with Chris W, My favorite bassist!
Love his basslines!
What about Tim Commerford of Audioslave/RATM!
Most of his lines ares pretty intersting due to the style they use!
Goose72 01-07-2007, 03:44 PM What about Tim Commerford of Audioslave/RATM!
Most of his lines ares pretty intersting due to the style they use!
yeah i forgot about him, i love Audioslave and RATM
i dont know how that slipped my mind
Devil6 01-07-2007, 06:35 PM Most of my fav new guys have been said, i'll also add
Dredg - Drew Roulette
And for those that might remember them, I Mother Earth - Bruce Gordon
punkbass479 01-07-2007, 09:37 PM by 'new' i meant last 5 years. geddy lee...he's great but that was the past 30 years, not 5. and who said john patitucci? the guy aint new and he doesnt play rock. but yea, he's pretty darn good. the guy from anti-flag is pretty good too (if you like him, check out matt freeman from rancid). i forgot about ryan martinie and tim commerfold. now that i think about it, that guy from breaking benjamin (i think it's marcus james or something) is not too bad either.
7Stringer 01-07-2007, 09:52 PM I wouldn't say "rock", but I'll second the Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne as one of the more interesting bassists recently:

TiMMay333 01-08-2007, 07:40 AM I hate the new album and they have been around for more than 10 years I'm talking about AFI and their bass player hunter, , the guy can really play ( check out sacrifice theory) and has a great tone .
+1
finally some recognition for the guy! Hunter burgan is one of the reasons i picked kup a bass, his lines are very creative, and his tone is unmistakenble!
Also chris wolstenholme is very VERY awsome too! :bassist:
SirCanealot 01-08-2007, 08:10 AM Dredg - Drew Roulette
I forgot about Drew too. I love him... I'm gay for him :D
Seriously, Dredg are one of my favourite bands these days. Gah at me for forgetting him :/
KromaatiKlauun 01-08-2007, 12:33 PM Justin Pearson of The Locust
perfektspace6 01-08-2007, 12:51 PM I wouldn't say "rock", but I'll second the Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne as one of the more interesting bassists recently:
+1
I would like to hear him play in a different context. Like some kind of metal jazz hybrid. Seems to be comfortable with slap, tap, chording, and general speed. I'm impressed with the variety of what he throws into just 1 song.
neptoon 01-08-2007, 01:26 PM i'll +1 on ryan martinie and justin chancellor
SlavaF 01-09-2007, 12:42 AM I don't listen to much new rock, and he is FAR from being the best at anything, but the dude in Disturbed isn't bad - he played some nice fills in their version of "Land of Confusion"
Justin Chancellor's awesome, but he's about a decade past "new"
Zebra 01-09-2007, 01:28 AM How about the guy from Alien Ant Farm? Although I don't think they put an album out after the singer was injured/sick (?).
Tye Zamora is a killer bassist. It's cool to see he gets some props.
JoeVictim 01-09-2007, 10:31 AM Chris #2 from Anti-Flag, i cant find his last name anywhere, they always refer to him as Chris #2 or just #2.
or Chris Ross from Wolfmother
just my $0.02
AtFlag basslines have always been awesome. Listen to We Got His Gun. That song is sick.
johnpaulbass 01-09-2007, 10:54 AM tool
muse
(old) incubus
audioslave/RATM
EDIT: I forgot MUDVYNE
Matt Till 01-09-2007, 01:28 PM Muse (after various band name changes became Muse): 1997... a decade ago!
Tool: Opiate: 1992! Jeez, what a bunch o' dinosaurs
Rage against the Machine... well, you get the point.
There are some good bassist listed, but a lot of them are far from NEW (all caps). New compared to Jamerson, but still... I'd be curious to know of some NEW rock bassists (who are the bestestest ever).
Ampeg SVT 01-09-2007, 11:48 PM He's been in the Foo Fighters for alomst 11 years now so this might not count. Nate Mendel, his lines are really melodic especially on See You.
The BurgerMeister 01-09-2007, 11:54 PM ok, ok.....
i vote Matt Till. :D
chronicfreeze 01-10-2007, 12:22 AM if your a fan of justin chancellor you need to check out jeff caxide of ISIS.
calebplaysbass 01-10-2007, 01:10 AM well as far as recent goes...BIG props to juan alderete for his work with the Mars Volta. freaking amazing. he can do mad solos as shown by his work on "Day of the Baphomets" (nice to see it's already mentioned) and just subtle and tasteful like on "The Widow." i'll keep listening to these guys if for no other reason than this guy
another person i'm a big fan of is Nate Query of The Decemberists (not too well known but they're on a major label so it should count). very subtle and not much going on but always very sweet and adds so much to the song. and he can also lay down a sweet sweet groove...just listen to "The Perfect Crime #2"
Ampeg SVT 01-10-2007, 06:11 PM Tim Commorford has got to be my hero...
I might say Queens of The Stone Age when Nick Oliveri was in the band. He is was a monster.
I might say Roger Twig as well from Less Than Jake, they play Punk/Ska/Rock and he kind of got me interested in Ska and the EBMM Sterling
Rich600 01-11-2007, 04:01 AM if your a fan of justin chancellor you need to check out jeff caxide of ISIS.
+100 he's amazing, In Fiction shows this off well, where the bass is pretty much the lead instrument for the whole song!
Check out James Leach from Sikth, he's amazing.
liquid-dream-ex 01-11-2007, 09:06 AM Ben Kenney - some very un-typical grooves on the last album.
Twistad 01-11-2007, 09:14 AM Although he's far from being "new", Juan Alderete is my favorite.
gkbass13 01-11-2007, 09:20 AM the dude from muse is pretty solid. ryan martinie's playing with mudvayne is pretty cool and different, although it isnt new by any means. look out for this kid named grady king with the band hourglass;-)
RSchuster 01-11-2007, 03:20 PM I'm going to go for "new" bands, rather than "new" bassists, with "new" meaning within the new millenium. In no particular order:
Tim Commerford - Audioslave
Juan Alderete - The Mars Volta
Drew Roullette - dredg
Mike Todd - Coheed & Cambria
Bob Hardy - Franz Ferdinand
Brandon Curtis - Secret Machines
Troy Sanders - Mastodon
If we were extending back to the 90s as well, I would include Chris Wolstenholme of Muse (because they put out their first album in the mid-late 90s, and were around for longer than that), Dave Meros of Spock's Beard (who is god), Les Claypool of Primus, and both Justin Chancellor and Paul D'amour of Tool. And Tim Commerford again, but for his work in Rage Against the Machine. OH, and Colin Edwin of Porcupine Tree.
the_fonz 01-11-2007, 05:27 PM Pig Benis from Mushroomhead. i've always loved his lines
iamlowsound 01-11-2007, 11:39 PM The guy from death from above 1979. The guy from protest the hero. Guy from protest is like 21 and the guy from DFA1979 is under 30, not to mention doing all the bass work for the new QOTSA cd.
lowsound
Twistad 01-11-2007, 11:43 PM a huge +1 to Protest the Hero
311fan 01-12-2007, 02:31 AM I would have to say Juan Alderete(TMV) and Jeordie White(APC) are both awesome players.
iamlowsound 01-12-2007, 12:00 PM I would have to say Juan Alderete(TMV) and Jeordie White(APC) are both awesome players.
Jordie White has been around for ever. He used to call himself twiggy ramarez and he played in Marilin Manson's band.
lowsound
Matt Till 01-12-2007, 01:22 PM ok, ok.....
i vote Matt Till. :D
He's even been around way too long.
I heard some kid at the music store that was like "Beedle bop bop ka slap beek bonk."
I don't know his name, but he's my new favorite.
FenderHotRod 01-12-2007, 01:26 PM Jordie White has been around for ever. He used to call himself twiggy ramarez and he played in Marilin Manson's band.
lowsound
And Juan Alderete has been around before Marilin Manson was even thought of.:D
FenderHotRod 01-12-2007, 01:29 PM Alright the Juan Alderete have forced me to post this pic....

Oh god... I'm glad the 80's are far behind us!
Me to on some parts...but man they could play their A$$@$ off.
RSchuster 01-17-2007, 05:27 PM Racer X (and indeed, the vast majority of the 80s) looked absolutely ridiculous, and not in a good way, but that's not to say that they weren't great. Far from it, Racer X were one of the best things to come out of 80s metal, alongside Metallica, Fates Warning, Queensryche, Dream Theater, and a handful of others who tended to avoid getting labeled "classic rock", a la Quiet Riot and Ratt and Bon Jovi.
BloodTypeBlue 01-18-2007, 02:08 AM It's about time somebody mentioned this guy.
