Recently aquired this 81 L1000 (swamp ash/ rosewood) which I have fallen in love with.

It has unfortunately had a bad refin (it was originally trans green) and I now have the dilemma of what colour to have it redone.
It doesn't show up on the picture but it does have a really nice grain pattern. I would like to avoid natural as 2 of my other 3 basses are natural. I was thinking maybe tobacco sunburst.

The bass is a nice weight with a stable neck and I have strung it with some old TI flats. I don't really want to hand it over to my repairer as I'm not sure I'll be able to bear being parted for so long :crying: .

Also the volume and tone knobs don't appear to be stock and I wondered if anyone hads any idea where I could get something similar ?

This is a shot of my '81 2KE. Nobody to the best of my knowledge has found a source for these type knobs.

I think I watched that sell on ebay recently? Nice bass, really nice amp!
Look at reranch.com for refin supplies and do it yerself.

I've been looking for those same knobs for years. The only source I know of is another G&L :crying:

I'd go with tobaccoburst; I had a sweet '80 L1K that was tobaccoburst over mahogany with an ebony board... it now resides out in Hollywierd with with a guy that runs an owl farm......

The "really bad refin add to the MoJo of the bass. Leave ti alone.

My 84 L2K has a really bad refin but I wouldn't think of refinishing it, EVER!!!

It does have a unique look that isn't fugly Nino. I have seen some horrid "refin" jobs that should really be undone.

Another from "the bad re-fin club." Currently just bare wood. I'm prolly just gonna celar over it, tho I may wipe on some tint to bring the grain out a little first. 1981 L2Ke:

How do I find the mfg date on my L-1000? The serial # on the bridge is B005415. Does that help? I traded a set of Moog Taurus bass pedals for it back in the 80's, but ??? , huh?

Hello Chef and thanks for the link! All this time and I never knew... '81. It's a black fretless and the neck is maple w what looks to me like a dark rosewood fretboard. If it's ebony, it's got a bit of chocolate striping.
Hey, got sumpthin' cookin for the game this afternoon? I'm hopin to whip up a little mojo groove, too.
Thanks Again!
