hmmm....I'd give the edge to Michael Rhodes. However, I've met Mike Brignardello and had him play a session that I was producing and he is an outstanding bass player. He's one of the top Session A bass players in Nashville and is always ranked very highly by Music Row magazine. There's also Glen Worf, Larry Paxton and Jimmie Lee Sloas (who is showing up on a lot of albums lately). Those are the top session bass players.

Most of the "road" bass players don't get too much attention (unfortunately).

I'm nominating Joey Canaday as one of the great country bassists as well. He's on the road with leann rimes on the weekends and does A-list sessions during the week in nashville.

There are a lot of bad men playing in Nashville, but I love Michael Rhodes playing! Very inventive!!

Slightly off topic, but I've heard Vic Wooten play bluegrass before - man, aint never heard a call and response between a bass and a mandolin like that! I know its not country , perse, but man, have to add that I hope we all get a Wooten/Monroe jam up in the heavens someday!
It would be quite heavenly!

Worf and Rhodes for sure.

Kevin Grantt whome I became aware of when his stolen bass was returned to him by a talk basser also has done some VERY cool work for Craig Morgan and Brad Paisley.

Some of the fills in redneck yacht club are must steal riffs

Yeah, Joey is really good. I actually met him a couple months ago in Nashville when he was doing a session for the Artist that I play with. Really nice guy.

I'm not sure if he's even doing the country thing any more, but there aren't many better than Keith Horne.

Yeah, Keith Horne is frickin great!! He used to play with Trisha Yearwood a while back, now he's with Hot Apple Pie. He's one of those left handed and upside down bass players ...

Also, I've seen him playing steel guitar in local Nashville clubs and he was really good ...go figure..

I'll go Old School:

Bob Moore (Bradley Barn Sessions)
Roy Huskey Jr.
Roy Huskey Sr.

On a vacation in Nashville last summer, I got to see Michael Rhodes and Eddie Bayers back up Brent Mason in a blues/rock/country/RnB/fusion group. He don't mess around.
