I have been playing bass for quite along time yet I hear about all these scales like the Ionian and such. Where can I find all the scales and the different places on the bass you can play them at? Thanks.

I think if you use the search engine here on TalkBass, you'll find plenty of material. Search "modes" as well as "scales."

Wow, very cool site Dave. On the chord structures, do the patterns work anywhere, or are they based in 1st or 2nd postition? Is the one the root note?

All of the patterns are meant to be moveable. You put the 1 on the note of the root key for each mode. It's important to know the intervals for all of those scales. It's also important to know how they relate to the Major scale but it's better to think of them as individual scales when playing over a chord so that the right tones are emphasized.

That is, you can think of the Dorian mode as the Ionian (Major Scale) mode starting at the 2nd degree. However, then you lose track of what your 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th tones are in relation to the chord you want to play over.

Probably a waste of money in the long run, but teaching myself bass the right way, I find I lose confidence on whether the scales I work out myself are right or not, and I get confused when asking...so I would rather see it in print.

This e-book one has all scales in all positions and it does me fine for under $25 AUD, most scale books in shops here start around the $30AUD mark, plus I need to get off my butt to go browse then buy :)
