VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Latin Jazz bassists..?
Rowan S 01-11-2007, 03:17 PM Theres a girl at school who i love to jam with, but her style is like a kind of classical / latin / blues.. Very nice stuff!! But i everything i do doesnt work, doesnt compliment her stuff properly. I dont want her to change HER style, because its fantastic.. but i thought i would use it as an oppertunity to learn something new
are there any jazz / latin kind of bassists worth checking out? jsut so i can follow on from them roughly.
Cheers
Rowan
PS anything you think could remotely help will do, because i know im being very specific..
Human Bass 01-11-2007, 04:09 PM Nico Assumpção, although he is brazilian, and we brazilians are not the a typical " caliente" latin people, we dont speak spanish :D
Petary791 01-11-2007, 06:54 PM Michael Anthony does some cool stuff on Elegant Gyspy by Al DiMeola.
Alvaro Martín Gómez A. 01-11-2007, 10:22 PM Lincoln Goines, Oscar Cartaya and Oscar Stagnaro are the three names that instantly come to my mind. Oh, and BTW, check this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXT07AnkYRE).
tzadik 01-12-2007, 04:17 AM How 'bout Larry Grenadier? He can really kick it. Check out some Brad Mehldau, there are always some killer Latin-flavored jazz tunes on his albums. Very happening. And you might light his playing here too...

The thing is that "Latin" covers a huge range of very different musical styles and especially bass lines!
So - a Salsa/Cuban bass line is very different from a Brazilian Bossa Nova or Samba bass line and these are both nothing like a Merengue or Tango !! :hmm:
So - you need to know what style is being played or you just won't fit in and often these styles are about how all the parts fit together to create a complex ensemble sound!
If you can say what style this girl is playing - maybe ask her? Then it would be possible to give advice/provide examples of bass lines in this style...
Otherwise - we're all just scrabbling in the dark!
tzadik 01-12-2007, 08:54 AM FWIW, a lot of female-vocal-Latin is bossa, which is the assumption on which I based my recommendation.
But I now join in asking...
Rowan S 01-12-2007, 09:28 AM Nah she aint a pianist, shes a guitarist. Next time i see her (tuesday i think) ill ask her what she thinks the best bet is...and if i can ill record her on my MP4...
Im at school at the moment, so i cant check any of those bassists out JUST yet...but i will check them out the second i get home
Thanks an awful lot guys, youv been so helpfull.i wasnt expecting this much response :hyper: :D

tkozal 01-12-2007, 09:41 AM Get some Tom Jobim, or Celso Fonseca to hear how Bossa should be played.

+1 Good selection of bass players.
Also one of the MI series books called Latin Bass is a good overview of the Afro-Cuban and Brazilian styles. Keep in mind in Latin bass the rhythm is more important than the notes.

That's like sending someone to Taco Bell when they ask for a good taqueria.

I have this. Excellent book, with CD. The CD has bass panned to one side so you can either listen with bass or remove the bass for practicing with a full band.
mike sancho 01-12-2007, 06:11 PM Check out anything Ruben Rodriguez played on and anyone who played in Carribean Jazz Project. Most of them have already been mentioned here.
bassist15 01-12-2007, 10:22 PM Im pretty sure Anthony JAckson is the bassist on Elegant Gypsy by Al DiMeola .Anthony Jackson was pretty big on latin music in the 70's so you could search through him.
j-raj 01-13-2007, 03:56 PM Y'all have already mentioned my favorites:
AJ(nice Calle 54 clips BTW!)
Oscar/s
Ruben
Andy Gonzales
Cachao
DGbass70 01-13-2007, 10:39 PM Alain Perez(PACO D LUCIA,CELIA CRUZ etc etc)
i believe he is on the Jerzy Drozd page....
WillBuckingham 01-13-2007, 10:54 PM Cachao
+1. Of course those kinds of grooves will be very weird if you try and force them into a samba or bossa nova context. But same thing if you try to force a samba bassline into a son groove, which happens all to often.
EDIT: And Juan Formell is another monster and a huge personal influence.
Rowan S 01-14-2007, 07:41 AM I was looking at that solo of that Malosetti chap on youtube..my god!! Its great!!! Thanks a bunch for that, i was trying to look for a new bassist to idol :P
What about bands? What bands are there with great bass playing in?
Sorry, but im still not familiar with what style of latin this female guitarist of mine plays, as i still havnt seen her.
Thanks

Man, I saw Alain Perez with Paco a couple of years ago (@ the Rialto) and he was doubling Paco's lighteningly fast lines like they were simple. Great groove and solid flamenco bounce to his playing.
IIRC He had a Maple and Alder(or Ash) natural 5'ver Drozd... I think that it was E-C tuning.
Chip Boaz 01-17-2007, 12:57 AM Alain Perez's latest CD, En el aire is really worth checking out, great groove playing and soloing.
Some players that I like that haven't been mentioned:
Carlos Del Puerto
John Benitez
Bobby Rodriguez
Jorge Reyes
Harvie S
and the guy that wrote the book mentioned above, Oscar Stagnaro.
+1 on Cachao, Andy Gonzalez, Ruben Rodriguez.
Lots of great bass playing in this style!
PocketGroove82 01-17-2007, 01:02 AM ANTHONY JACKSON's latin playing with MICHELE CAMILO.
love it!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Where can i get it!
I learned about Alain Perez because of his work with Cuban band HABANA ABIERTA.
Chip Boaz 01-17-2007, 11:10 PM I downloaded En el aire from Emusic, its also available on iTunes. This album is instrumental latin jazz. I guess he recorded another solo album a couple of years ago that was more of a dance album. I've never heard that one, but I'd love to check it out sometime. He's pretty amazing; not only is he an incredible bass player, he's a great singer, arranger, and more.
I've never heard the Habana Abierta CD, I'll have to track it down. I love his stuff with Issac Delgado out of the 90s. He laid down some heavy timba tumbaos. Definitely dance music, but really worth checking out.
Snarf 01-18-2007, 12:01 AM Oscar Stagnaro ftw. My favorite teacher ever.

Habana Abierta is a band that mixes a lot of different syles in their music...is good stuff.
I think you can hear some stuff here:

Have you tried to check FLAMENCO?
DGbass70 01-20-2007, 08:20 AM Abraham Laboriel , Salvador Romo ( Caifanes)I like Juan(MANA) he has good sound.
derrenleepoole 01-20-2007, 02:57 PM Just bought the Alain Perez CD through iTunes. Damn good stuff and highly recommended :) Just off to buy some Cachao now to check him out........
CDuff 01-20-2007, 04:07 PM Orlando "Cachaito" López.
Listen to Buena Vista Social Club, possibly the best album ever made (which of course is subjective).
Such amazing songs and, even if none of it rubs off on you, your life will be better for having heard the album.
everything you ever wanted to know about Latin Bass + a play along CD - Oscar Stagnaro is #1 as a player & teacher.

Another book by the same publisher is "The True Cuban Bass". I don't know how much of that stuff overlaps with this book, but if you want to learn to play authentic Cuban bass, that is a great resource.
Risen Ashes 01-22-2007, 12:33 AM Agreed for Cuban-style/afro-cubano go with Cachao, he's LEGEND to us Cubans
Risen Ashes 01-22-2007, 12:38 AM Some more: Wily Chirino, Celia Cruz (already mentioned),
Beny More http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benny_Mor%C3%A9
For modern "Mexican/Cross-over" check out Kumbia Kings or Kumbia All Stars, the main guy is the bassist which is Selena's brother and he does, salsa(cuban), kumbia, raggaeton and other styles
Rodriguez 01-22-2007, 10:41 AM Hey Risen Ashes, another legend of Cuban descent is (Tampa born and NYC raised) Anastacio Roberto Rodriguez, better known as Bobby. He's a pioneer of Latin jazz bass playing. He recorded the composition "Tanga" w/ Machito and the Afro-Cuban in 1948, historians say that it all started w/ that tune, at least on the NY scene. I can go on and on about Bobby, he's a God to me and many others in this genre.
Chip Boaz 01-23-2007, 12:30 AM I would totally agree with Ruben about Bobby, he was definitely the man. Check out Descargas At The Village Gate, Vol. 3 by the Tico All Stars. It has a song called Descargas de Contrabajos - its a little under 20 minutes of Cachao and Bobby Rodriguez trading bass solos. Its a very cool track, an incredible study!
Chip Boaz 01-23-2007, 01:11 PM Someone mentioned Al McKibbon earlier on this thread - got me thinking and took another listen to his album Tumbao Para Los Congueros de mi Vida. What a killer album! He does some great latin versions of Monk tunes as well as other great standards (and original tunes). Lots of bass soloing from him as well - really tasty stuff. His stuff with Cal Tjader is of course classic and totally worth checking out, but I really dig this album.
hands5 02-11-2007, 06:46 PM Nico Assumpção, although he is brazilian, and we brazilians are not the a typical " caliente" latin people, we dont speak spanish :D I saw Nico with Ricardo Silvera about 15 yrs ago. He's a very melodic player
Human Bass 02-12-2007, 09:41 AM Arthur Maia!! He is awesome and plays with Gilberto Gil.
Check out his work with pianist/vocalist Elaine Elias.
Lorenzini 02-12-2007, 10:27 AM Armando Gola.
Heaviest gig probably with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and that's heavy, man.
Plays upright and 5 and 6 string electric.
