I have to put a new neck on my Yamaha trash bass(found it in the trash). It has a 24 fret neck. But I am having a terrible time locating a 24 fret neck. Could I get away with putting a neck that is not 24 frets on it? Possible a Fender Jazz or P style.

Probably not. It would have to fit in the neck cavity in the body. You don't say which model Yamaha you have. It's probably not the same as Fender style replacement necks. If you go to the Warmoth site, search around and find the dimensions for the neck cavity. It's in there in the "necks" section. See if it matches your Yamaha's neck cavity. If not, it's probably not worth trying to make a replacement neck fit.

You might be able to get a replacement neck from Yamaha that would fit if you really want to make that bass work. You'd have to contact them.

If you haven't yet, watch eBay, and you may have to watch for a very long time. Yamaha may offer replacement parts, have you tried them? Local luthier who could make you one?

Otherwise, you're in a pickle. A neck with different fret count or scale length, if it fit the pocket, would require the bridge to be moved. There are a couple extreme measures I considered when I had a project body that I couldn't find a neck for...

If you're handy with wood, you may be able to cut a Carvin 24 fret through-neck to fit.

Or, if you're just aching for a project, cut the body rebuild the bass as a through neck with that Carvin part.

So, um, best of luck to you. I hope you find the part.

Perhaps the reason you found it in the trash in the first place?
