I was just listening to the new Incubus album and all I can say is that this has to be the best work I've heard Ben do with Incubus to date!

I mean if you haven't go to their myspace page and just give their song "Dig" a listen.

I was really dissapointed when Dirk Lance left but I'm just totally blow away by Ben's tone and his melody he uses!

Any other fans?

His lines are the only thing that I like about the new cd. Incubus was really a better band with dirk, not saying that he was the reason that thy were better.

I agree. Just my opinion, but I'm not really a fan of their music now.

I don't even like the new Incubus record. They were my favorite band for years. I think Alex really made the band, but I still loved Crow Left of the Murder. This one just didn't do it for me.

yeah actually "Dig" is the best song on the new album...alas.

He's a great bassist (if you haven't heard it, try to find one of his solos from the crow tour), Einziger (sp) is a great guitarist, and the drummer is a great drummer. That being said, singerboy is a piece of crap lately, and I don't like the direction the band is going.

Ben's playing has grown on me immensely.:bassist:

I've got nothing but good things to say about him.

Kenneys tone is ok on the recordings, live however it is just painful to hear. Dirk was just a much better bass player and much better for Incubus. Mike Einziger remains one of my favourite guitarists ever.

Wow, Incubus has completely lost their balls. As for Ben's playing it is nothing compared to Alex's.

I really don't think they've lost their balls-just going in a new direction with their music and doing a lot of maturing?

And I've noticed that Mike has gone exclusively to old Fender guitars and dropped the PRS's wonder what all that was about?

I don't think mature is the word that discribes slow and boring.

Well if that's how you see-but we can't listen to the slappity-slap of "Redefine" or "Certain Shade of Green" forever now can we?

I think he plays some very unusual bass. Almost guitarlike but still keeping the groove.
Diamonds and Coal for example... actually quite "basic" but it's more melodic than your average rocksong-bassline.

And i think that A kiss to send us off, is a really good song, that maybe on eday will find a place in a best-off incubus compilation.

I don't really compare Dirk and Ben.....they're both dang fine players, and I try not to compare.....it's like....I like wine, but I like White Zin just as much as a Cab, ya know? Yeah, Dirk was more "bassy" a player, but Ben brings another color to the mix, and you gotta love that in and of itself. If you don't, meh, just enjoy Dirk's work then. I think the change has made Incubus a little more abstract, but I like that, so I love both versions:)

I guess maybe its because Dirk Lance is one of my favorite bassists, but I can't stand Ben Kenny, or incubus after Morning view. They seemed to have lost there real groove and went more indie sounding for my tastes...
I really don't like Kenny's tone or his approach. Not trying to be a jerk, but I just don't dig it.
Dirk's new project looks amazing... From the tiny clips i've heard up to this point at least.

They were 21 when they wrote that album. He rarley slapped on make yourself, and didnt at all on Morning view. He grooved, and had the best tone i've ever heard.

Word. Are You In? is the bassline that inspired me to pick up bass.

Yeah I don't want anyone to get me wrong you know. I like to listen to their older stuff too but you kow after a few times through I need something a little LESS top speed ya know? Being a little OLDER (I'm 30) Incubus is a band I've really grown up with and I like their new direction.

Dirk is still a great player and I can't wait till he does a new project but I'll never quit listening to Incubus.

It just seems like most people either LOVE or HATE Incubus since Dirk left.

I thought Morning View was a mature album. The past two albums, in my opinion is incubus with a different bassist trying to be something they are not. I've bought the last two albums, and outside of Jose, I don't hear anything thats good to me... When I think of incubus, I think of groove... To me, they don't have that element anymore.

I bought a few albums off of a fellow TBer just to see what all the hubbub was about since it always seems to be an issue of who is better. Maybe it's just the overall production, but I liked "A Crow" more than "Make Yourself," and it's easily on par with "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." For some reason in the Dirk albums the bass is more subtly in the mix, but in "A Crow" it's there and pretty aggressive.

I actually like Kenney's bass lines a lot. They're melodic and groove fairly well. I think that the majority of people don't like Ben Kenney just because he's not Dirk Lance. So what if he's mostly known as a guitar player? I think if I'd never have known that he was then his bass lines would still be good in my book.

I think it's cool that Incubus wants to change. It's not like they didn't change after "Fungus Amongus" and I'm glad they did. Being a wannabe Mr. Bungle Chili Peppers band would have gotten old fast.

To be honest I think their maturity peaked on Morning View. I think it was a genius album, after that it seems to have gone backwards
to me. Especially with Brandon, he's gone from clever literature to whining pretty boy.

I don't like the band as a whole much anymore, but Ben Kenny is an amazing musician, especially his solo work.

And to whoever said Jose is the highlight of them now, I agree. Though he always has been for me.

I have to say that even as a bass player, Dirk Lance was not the reason I became an Incubus fan, nor was he the reason I remained an Incubus fan. The creativity of "Make Yourself" in the sea of crap that was modern rock in the late 90s is what brought me in, and Einzinger is the guy that keeps me in.

I think the reasons stated by some in this thread for not liking the "new" Incubus are exactly the reasons I do like the "new" Incubus. They are creative enough to tread new ground with each release. If "Light Grenades" sounds indie, so be it. They do indie a whole lot better than the majority of the indie bands I have heard out there. I couldn't have said it any better than InternalAffair. As much as I love "S.C.I.E.N.C.E" and "Fungus Amongus", the whole BunglePepper thing would have doomed them to obscurity.

I've come around a bit on Kenney as a player...he's pretty solid, nothing great, but solid and dependable playing.

That said, if we were to make a car comparison, Kenney is like a Toyota Avalon. It's a really nice car. Alex (the old bassist) is like a Mercedes S Class in comparison, so trying to compare the two bassist is like trying to compare these two cars (there really is no comparison).

For those of you that noted that their music doesn't sound the same, the reason is because Alex was the primary song creator, so now that he's gone, I'm assuming Mikey is the main guy. I'm also a little disappointed with the Mikey has evolved as a player...he was very good, very cutting edge, now he's just blah.

The band is just different now...they really should have changed their name because it's really like a totally different band with Alex out of the picture.

Ben Kenney is the man! I love his lines, he's changed the way I'm playing. As for the Dirk vs. Kenney, I prefer Kenney more.

Reason: Kenney is not a slapper, he's not a tapper, he's just trying to make lines that sound musically appealing. I can relate to his passive approach. I'm not saying the above is bad, it's just not the direction I want to go in.

His best stuff can be heard on his second solo album Maduro. It doesn't hurt that he plays Mesa and Lakland, fools trying to copy me.

As for Incubus, Light Grenades SUCKED! Annamolly was the only track I really liked off at that album. I hope they come out with another A Crow Left of The Murder esque album.
