VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Grover Washington Jr.
lefty007 01-12-2007, 02:27 PM So, I have Grover Jr.'s "Ultimate Collection" CD. The album is filled with the funkiest and smoothest bass lines from the '70s. I know young Marcus Miller played on "Just the two of us." But the rest of the songs seem to have nothing but P-Bass in them.
Anybody know who played on this albums? This particular album is a compilation, so I guess I'm referring to several of his '70s albums.
Anthony Jackson?
I googgled it up, but couldn't find anything.
Thanks.
James Hart 01-12-2007, 03:07 PM not sure about your disc.. but I listen to "Live at the Bijou" a lot and it's got Tyrone Brown tearing it up with a gritty P bass tone.

steveb98 01-12-2007, 06:36 PM I think Gordon Edwards was on some of the early CTI stuff of Grover's. You want to get blown away their is a live Grover in concert DVD with a young Anthony Jackson play his famous Career Girl JBass.
JSCHRO7376 01-12-2007, 06:38 PM Chuck Webb was with Grover Washingtin Jr. for quite some time; I am pretty certain that he is playing bass on a few tunes.
Rodriguez 01-12-2007, 11:00 PM Is it on Columbia Records? I'm on the Latin tune. I was in the band for a year in '93 .... had some great moments.
Easy,

very cool!
jerry 01-13-2007, 09:54 AM Gary King played the classic line on Mr. Magic. Grover's records always had sweet bass grooves on them. +1, on James Hart's Live At The Bijou recommendation, I wore that album out learning and playing Tyrone Brown's grooves in the 70's......Lock It In The Pocket anyone.:bassist:
Dr. Cheese 01-13-2007, 10:13 AM I remember seeing Gary King on the back of a Bob James CD. He had some sort of semi-solid body bass guitar. Anyone know if he used that bass often?

He used that bass on a lot of those 70's recordings, I forget the brand name though. It had a unique tone.
markjazzbassist 01-13-2007, 04:30 PM allmusic.com has the following bassists listed in the credits for that CD.
Marcus Miller, Gary King, Tyrone Brown, Ron Carter, Louis Johnson, and Cedric A. Napoleon.
I know Gary was on Mister Magic and Black Frost.
pocket_groover 01-13-2007, 08:59 PM He's one of my favorites. I saw him in the 70's and for the last three years before he passed away. His live version of "Let It Flow" just cooks! You can see/hear one version on the "Standing Room Only" DVD.

Good to know.

No reason to be afraid to admit it... just take notes :bassist: I keep a text document on my desktop and whenever someone or some band is mentioned that I don't know in context to stuff I do dig... I copy/paste it to that file. I think I could buy a disc a day till the end of my days and never run out of new music :bassist:

How is the video/audio on this? I've been thinking of buying it but have read some bad reviews about the digital transfer.
lukaas 01-21-2007, 04:45 AM Its not quite "magnificent audiophile quality" that the dvd suggests but it is not bad~ considering the age of the content, its really quite good.
Definitely Definitely worth buying....
