Finally, I get an L2K with a maple neck, and a wide one at that.
Used to be red, now it's bare wood with some sort of flaking off easily scratched wax. No biggie, some sand paper and tru-oil will take care of that.
Weight 9.15 lbs. Sonically, what we've all come to expect from the early E series: big tasty aggressive tone.

I had no idea that the neck pup on these things was, well, all that and then some. Yowza!
I think the bridge pup stands alone better than what y'all have indicated, but this one is cranked right up against the strings.
I spent some time messing with the "SB2 tone settings" from that thread. Kewl stuff. I can't wait to get this out live and kill some folks with it.

What size nut do those SB-2's have. Are they Jazz width or are they the same size as the L-2000's?

I am toying with the idea of getting a fretless SB-2 but I don't care for narrow jazz necks. I've thought about getting a fretless L-2000 but I really prefer the notion of a passive instrument for fretless.

The fretless MIM Jazz just isn't cutting it for me anymore.

Oh, and one more question. How feasible is it to wire in a tone knob on those SB-2's? Has anyone done so?

The neck is standard 1.5 jazz width, but a little deeper.
Tone control is possible by swapping in a concentric popt in position one, for vol/vol, and using the second pot for tone.
Really not necessary, but you can if you like...

Yep Chef with the bridge pickup raised high it is cool. Mine is meaner than Wanda's or a new stock one we tried at the factory. :eyebrow: Dunno why but me likey. :hyper:

Kael go to Oklahoma Vintage Guitars and try some G&L's out. The L2K can be run passive. Many of us rarely use the active aspect of it. Find a model you like? You can get one in a fretless.

Like you I don't like the skinny Jazz necks however the G&Ls as Chef said are thicker and while narrow don't have that "skinny" feel like some Jazzes do.

How high do you guys generally set the neck pickup on your SB-2s? I'm not sure that I've found the sweet spot for mine yet- I liked it really high, but noticed that it was throwing my intonation off in the higher register....I know on past P basses I've owned, I've generally left the P pickup lower than I would a J pickup- but this SB-2 P pickup is a different animal through and through.

Any suggestions? (I could probably also stand to raise my bridge pickup a teensy bit too as its not as likely to put the strings out of tune)

As a general rule I run mine as high as I can without fouling the strings on it when I dig in, but I've not messed with the SB2 at all...

Like Chef I run 'em high. Main thing on the SB-2 is to have the bridge a fair bit higher than the neck. Its a ratio thing.

I've found the pickups on both my G&Ls to be so powerful that they will pull the intonation out in the high register when set as high as any of my non-G&L basses. I don't think the bridge pickup will do that on an SB-2 (its a little weak in comparison)- so I will set that as high as possible, I just haven't decided on the P pickup- there is much tonal variation to be had depending on how high that pickup is set (I've tried it just about everywhere!).

In this new 81 L2Ke, I may need to run the pups a little lower.
It was just flippin massive on stage last night running thru a wt800B and Schroeder 410...
I'll try it with the Thunderfunk next, and I'll bet that tightens it up a bunch, but I may have to drop them a tad with this one...

Man, that mutha is hot! It was pinging the clip light on my TFB420 at 2.5...this is substantially lower than my other '81 L2Ke, and in fact any other bass I have.
It's really deep and bassy too. It's gonna take me some time to get used to this one; I may try lowering the neck pup a tad and see if that calms her down some...
