I think I might have gotten a bad batch, because my pickups are really hot compared to the other squiers I've played. And since I'm going to be stuck with this bass for awhile I think I'll just shell out and get some different pickups. What are some reletively cheap pickups that still sound good? I don't really want to go over $50 but if I have to I will.

I was looking at those and those were my first guess. Question about pickups from a n00b. Will better quality pickups be hot? Like are they meant for a large amp or can they run through a 15 watt with little problems? Because right now my Hartke clips out at 5 and up. And the other Squiers I tried didn't do that.

The higher the DC resistence the more sound you can get from your bass. So lets say your old Pups were pushing 5.00, then you upgrade and now you get 9.0 Now, your amp will clip earlier because you are getting more efficient power and sound from your bass. Changing pups will solve problems, but getting a better amp should be your primary objective. I was faced with the same dilema about 3 months ago. I bought a bigger amp to get the bigger sound. changing pup is a quick fix to a problem that it may not completely resolve.
