I noticed the D string is running over both P pickups- does that affect the sound?

Karl,
Do you mean the A string?
The tone balance is even across all the strings.
So to my ears the is no adverse effect.

Oops- yeah....Maybe it is out of the magnetic field of the upper coil on the P- otherwise there would be some phase cancellation only on that 1 string!

My trusty fretted banger is a mid-90s four-string version of this bass. I can attest to the fact that Fernandes made a great (and highly underrated) bass in the APB model. It's versatile and plays wonderfully. Gotoh hardware, nice wood, estimable construction, well-balanced ergonomics... The only weakness is the noisy stock electronics - which in this (and my) case have been upgraded.

I would tend to agree with you. However the current run of lower-end Fernandes basses seem to effect the popularity, quality, craftmanship and sound of this particular model. I have held on to this one for a long time, and I have what I believe to be a few quality basses this being one of them, but I have gotten quite use to the wider string spacing on my other basses. Bottom line I am going to be needing another PJ5 after this one is gone.
Thanks.
