VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Manring on YouTube -
deckard 01-18-2007, 02:22 PM Just watched some new pieces on YouTube featuring Michael -
he's in a quartet format (bass, drums, piano, guitar) & plays (among others) Miles' "Solar", Metheny's "Bright Size Life" and about 6 more.
All are excellent performances...
Anyone know if/where these can possibly be obtained on VHS or DVD?
Thanks much!!!
Edit: I just realized this may be the (now unfortunately out-of-print & hard-to-find) group video made around the time of "Thonk" - am I right?
bassplayer2106 01-20-2007, 03:06 PM A DVD of Michael playing live would be fantastic.

VintageBT6Lover 01-20-2007, 09:28 PM danke!
bassplayer2106 01-21-2007, 06:04 AM The version of Giant steps is fantastic, I've not heard him play 'normally' before.
threshar 01-21-2007, 08:14 AM As an "owner" of the Thonk video, this is it. I originally bought the Thonk video thinking it was what the guy mentioned earlier - sessions or tunes from Thonk. The company that put the video out decided to name it after Manrings album. Michael has said he has no idea why they did that.
Good playing on it. Great version of what police tune spirits in the material world.
christobass 416 01-21-2007, 12:44 PM Really? I've read that it was sessions taken from Thonk...hmmm....stupid misinformation.
So Tim Alexander and Alex Skolnick do not appear on the tape?
threshar 01-22-2007, 11:52 AM Nope. it is a performance study of a group of people who never played before.
I bought the video thinking the same thing you did and when I watched it I said "***?"
Great vids though. There's a few others from what I think was his tour of Italy playing with a few different people.
I hope he brings out this new DVD he's been hinting at. It would be very good.

Yes that's one featuring me and My Big band Playing a Jaco Tribute called "Moodswings" in Milano..
i have some other with Michae playing Havona and Donna Lee... I hope i'll find the time to put it on You tube if Michael will Agree...
all the best
maurizio
Cool. You both looked like you were having fun!
Bet the other vids are good too. You should post them, if Mr Manring doesn't mind.
That's a funky looking bass you've got, what make is it?

Yeah, playing with Michael it's an incredible trip, it's too great as a musician but it's a great man and a great friend first...
i hope we'll be able to do it again in the future.
I'll keep you informed when i'll put some other video on line.
take care
MR
p.s.
the bass it's an italian bass called "laurus"
You can find info visiting : www.laurus.it
it's a great instrument hand made by an italian liuthier called Pierluigi Cazzola
Ah, I thought it looked familiar. I've been on that website before, lovely instruments.

Yeah, that is footage from the THONK VHS, I have it. I used to think copies of thonk were really hard to find, and they are if you are looking in local record stores. But they are always popping up on ebay all the time. I have the VHS of thonk and the Original CD.
Does anyone know how to get the tone Michael had during Giant Steps in the Thonk video? It was an absolutely lovely tone.
Michael Manring 03-05-2007, 12:27 AM Maurizio, my friend! Great to see you here. I'm so glad you guys are getting a chance to hear some of Maurizio’s music. What a great musician he is. I have fond memories of playing with his big band that night and as I recall, our duo stuff was pretty spontaneous and way fun. Maurizio, please feel free to post whatever you like.
Thanks for the interest in that old “Thonk” video, guys. As was mentioned, I have no idea why they called it that, other than perhaps they confused it with the instructional video I did focusing on the solo pieces on Thonk at the same session. If I’m not mistaken, the rights to the footage are owned by Hal Leonard, so it’s probably up there illegitimately. In any case, it was another fun day of very spontaneous music making.
If I recall correctly (sheesh, was it 12 years ago?!), I just plugged my bass into my Rane EQ and Lexicon LXP-5 for the session, then the signal was taken direct and the amp was mic-ed. I seem to have a vague recollection of doing the audio mix myself, but I could be mistaken. In any case, thanks so much for the interest in this old footage.
Maurizio Rolli 03-05-2007, 12:58 AM Michael!! thank you my friend. I only would like that you know that you and this night have a special place in my heart and i can't wait to meet you again and to play with you again.
We should seriously think to do some project...it would be a great honour and a great joy.
let's think about it.
take care my friend
p.s. i would like to post some other video of that night but i can't remember the process to transform my minidv in dvx.. i'll work on it...i could send you some copy to if you're interested.
