I know us slappers are an inquisitive bunch. Over on RABB there's always people asking questions about setups, amps etc. so I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread where we can list our stuff and give it a quick review. I'll start.

Basses:

My first bass, Andreas Zeller Romanian bass, huge bass with a carved front, ply back. Set up with an adjustable bridge, upgraded endpin and Emerson plain guts (the $75 from Upton). Has a K&K rockabilly pickup, sounds great for old school stuff, I use it for recording mainly and the occasional gig.

Roderich Paesold 590P, German built laminate bass, a fair bit smaller than the Zeller. Currently off duty for a while. I use a Schaller magnetic pickup on this with a piezo buzzer slap pickup and a Bassmax as a backup for either one. I have been using Eurosonic ULs on it but I want to try something else, maybe Spiro solos or Helicore solos. This is my stage bass and it is LOUD. It's currently in a sorry shape after I tried to refit the already too thin bridge feet and gouged the varnish, still this is just a good excuse to get it refinished in something a little more interesting and to order a bulletproof bridge.

Amp:

Asdown MAG 300 4x10 combo with a 1x15 MAG extension cabinet, great amp and cab, tough too, my amp has taken manys a fall, including the amp and cab both getting released from their restraints and banging together during a van wreck, gigged with them the next day and they sounded just the same as ever.

Stuff:

Behringer feedback destroyer pro. I use this when I gig the Zeller, it does the job but requires some setting up, it can also be used as an EQ.

AKG guitar bug wireless. It does the job and has been gigged plenty, batteries last OK and the sound isn't effected, it also gives me the freedom to show off a little with the bass, and move around a bit.

Last but not least, I use a surge protector. Every gigging musician should have one, some of the places we play have suspect wiring and you can end up plugging into a daisychain of power strips. It's just another line of defence between the maiuns supply and the amp's fuse.

Hey, I've got a Shen SB-100. I'm currently renting it from The Loft in Columbus, but there's no question that I'm going to apply my rentals toward purchase of this baby.

It's a blonde, and it was love at first sight.

It works really well for bluegrass. I haven't used a pickup yet, but I guess a nice Fishman will do the job when I'm ready.

Dude!

I've got a Gold Tone White Ladye with a factory-installed pickup. Believe it or not, my Deering Goodtime openback sounds way better when used with an acoustic amp. The Gold Tone sounds tinny when amplified, and the Deering rocks.

But played acoustically, the Gold Tone has a very nice sound, so I just play it that way and plug in the Deering when amplification is called for.

I'm continually amazed at the value for the money you get in a Deering banjo.......

.

If it's a blonde, than I believe you have what they call a SB-90. If the sticker inside says 100, than you have one of the first few blonde Shens produced. Post a pic, I havn't seen one in person yet.

Stay away from the Fishman BP-100, I have never heard one sound good. Get a Rev Solo, or Underwood.

Amp

Ampeg SVT AV - This is the silver 'vintage' looking SVT Anniversary issue that they made in 06' which is virtually the same as the SVT CL. Tone for days. I played GK's for a long time but even with the Sans Amp Bass Driver D.I., I couldn't quite get that organic warmth. Not to mention that all tube heads tend to have a natural compression to them and tend to smooth and even things out where as with the GK, you hear everything..Also, my musical and stylistic approach 'matured' if you will and Ampeg was the only answer. Not to mention I have almost always recorded with SVT classic heads. To me there are 2 bass heads. The Ampeg SVT Classic and the GK 1001Rb or 800 RB. All the rest just kind of bum me out. Although I do like some Ashdowns that I have heard.

Cab(s)

70's Vintage SVT 810. Rare model, lighter than some, made with the two swivel handles on the back.

also, for portability etc. I run through a Fender 115 Pro. Just a single 15" that sounds amazing powered by the SVT. 15's have a fatness that I can't get with 10's.

Pedals

Sansamp Bass Driver D.I., Boss Bass Chorus, Boss Bass EQ, Electro Harmonix (Russian) Big Muff Pi.

Basses

Mid 90's Ernie Ball Music Man Sting Ray 4

Early model Music Man Sterling 4
