My process won't sound too exciting, but I stripped my brother's ESP guitar with a straight edge Xacto blade, like chiseling off the paint. Once I got an edge started, it just peeled off like Scotch tape in little 1/4" strips. After a half hour, I got quite efficient and was ripping it off in whole lengths from top to bottom.
AND it was excellent stress relief! Better than popping bubble wrap!

Any chance a heat gun (strong blow-dryer) would work in this situation, and perhaps a chisel or drywall spatula?

H,mm sounds quik solution but risky, im aware that heatguns can burn surfaces if you overexpose/overblow an area and im afraid that i might need to heat like an animal i still cant believe how thick this finnish is.
