VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : about to get a g&l, please help.....
skiscem 01-24-2007, 07:56 AM i cant decide between maple fretboard and rosewood, i know many people asked about this before, but im a little concerned about sound...like people say, maple is brighter and rosewood darker...is the difference big? the tone im looking for is like Tool bassist...+wal sound...musicman...
thanks in advance
quickervicar 01-24-2007, 09:33 AM Go with maple for that tone. Plenty of "crack" to punch through the mix.
spideyjg 01-24-2007, 11:10 AM I agree to go maple or maybe ebony.
Jim
skiscem 01-24-2007, 12:23 PM thanks, i would like to go for the ebony but im getting a tributre so...ill stick with maple and natural finish..

quickervicar 01-25-2007, 09:28 AM Suggestions? Get a Mesa/Boogie M-2000 head (or maybe an M-Pulse 600) and perhaps a SansAmp GT2 to get Justin Chancellor's snarling grind.
My Mesa Bass 400+ alone gets close to his grind, but lacks the hi-fi aspect of it. It's just too warm.
Did I just say that?
Something like this sound?

Made on a maple necked G&L L2000
quickervicar 01-25-2007, 01:53 PM I'm guessing that he's after something a bit more like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpckgQMtrUY&mode=related&search=
You can capture the essence of his tone in the first minute if you find the video disturbing. Or, listen to it with the window minimized.

Bright. I'm thinking brand new Stainless Steel strings, back pup, parallel mode (thinner, cleaner sound, IMO), Active with treble boost.
spideyjg 01-25-2007, 11:46 PM To get close to a Wal type sound you need to roll the bass way back.
Geddy Lee Wal sound= both pickups+series+10 or 20% bass+treble full on or slight cut depending on string age and type.
For that sound of Tool I'd try active with treble boost also and maybe add some more bass.
The L2K puts out tons of low end so you need to cut it back if trying to get close to a Wal.

More important than the gear is the right hand technique. Pick or not, attack, and placement are crucial if you are trying to replicate a someone's sound.
A great example is John Entwistle. You watch the youtube isolated bass clips of Baba 'O Riley and Wont get Fooled Again and and watch his right hand attack. You will never get that type of sound unless you hit the strings that way.
With an L2K you will have 2 humbucking pickups in a similar position as the Wal so you got the important gear aspect covered.
You can't match a dual pickup sound out of a single pickup bass no matter what you do.

If I remember correctly, it was back pup, series with the bass rolled off some. Active no boost, semi-old strings through a Korg Pandora either set flat or with a slight smiley EQ (sorry, made it at least two years ago, brightest recording I have)
