Hi all, I was hoping someone would know about the wood enough know if I can use it for neck lams, or body blanks.
I recently recieved a bunch of it and am eager to start my first project. I tried to look for a janka hardness rating for apple but couldn't find one anywhere it seemed. Any help woud be appreciated and thanks for your time

My experience with apple wood is that it smells bad, and dosn't seem hard or straight grained enough for bass use, but someone may prove me wrong

not so sure about its use for necks (although with enough carbon fiber most any wood can be used), but it definitely could make for an unusual body blank if you had large enough pieces for a 2 or 3-piece body. If you find some with enough figure, it could also make an interesting bookmatched top and/or back

Not stiff enough for neck and not hard enough for fingerboards.

Pretty enough for body tops, but rather heavy for solid bodies.

Alright, so chambered body it is. Thanks Guys. Is it possible to use wood that has knots, or a knot in it? Does that inhibit the wood's resonance?

knots depend on the look you are wanting, just make sure they're not in a critical structural interface area (like where the neck and body join.) you then make the call as to whether any pits need to be filled

one question for you: this apple wood is properly dried, right? you're not planning on using fresh cut wood are you?

My friend's uncle owns a sawmill north of here and somebody had ordered and paid him for it, 2 years ago and still has not been back. It went from his storage, to my friend's truck, to my house. while it still has only been sawn to 2" and still has bark around the edges. it hasn't yet been planed. I would be looking at a couple of 2 piece bodies, and about 2-3 3 piece bodies.

If it doesn't hold up in th building process, you can use it to smoke up a couple of pork shoulders. Call me when it's dinner time!:D

Seriously, though, I'd like to see how it turns out.
