James Hart 01-29-2007, 05:19 AM I like the shape!
I like the QotSA font on the pickups :ninja:
Sounds like a great project. How would you make your own bridge? I'd be tempted to just go for the individual saddles myself (can't remember the name)
erikbojerik 01-29-2007, 06:13 AM Looks good so far. I hope you have a strong back & shoulders! Gravity will be pulling on this one big time.
warwickben 01-29-2007, 06:51 PM i was soo happy to read the frist few post.
but i feel dumb for asking but what do you mean by:I like the QotSA font on the pickups.
the purple heart is the one that was made for me.
i have worked in machine shops, and my buddy's work is pretty cool they have a keg and a big screen tv so the owner doesnt care if they hang out and party there. if i go after hours my buddy lets me use the bridge port if he doesnt have a crazey setupon it. i machined the center section for a perfect fit for the neck. i did it this way to make my life easyer ie shapeing the neck and body and the wires. iam thinking of doing leds. i was gonna machine the bridge out of some brass i have on a bridgeport or get a hip shot.
should i put leds in the finger board.
the body is lighter then it seems cause i made is as thin as i could with out haveing problems.

Well (and it's not going to be worth reading this) the black pup behind your purple one has text on it in the font used on the Queens of the Stone Age album "Songs for the Deaf". See here (http://www.rockandmetaldomain.co.uk/queens_of_the_stone.jpg).
Looks like a killer project anyway.
pilotjones 01-29-2007, 09:41 PM i have worked in machine shops, and my buddy's work is pretty cool they have a keg and a big screen tv so the owner doesnt care if they hang out and party there. if i go after hours my buddy lets me use the bridge port ...PLEASE BE CAREFUL! I know your buddies feel everything is under control, and there's never been a problem, etc. ... but I know more than one machinist with fewer than ten fingers, and accidents are usually simply because of being tired, without the added alcohol.
In the end, you can't necessarily change someone else's actions, but you are responsible for your own safety. Be smart.
Also, never work in the shop alone. It's like the buddy system swimming: if you get injured, you don't want to bleed out, or try to drive yourself to a hospital injured. Sorry to get so serious, but there's a lot of horsepower and knife edges involved here. A combination to be treated with respect.
warwickben 01-30-2007, 05:22 AM sorry i didnt mean to make it sound like they get drunk and machine parts, and i would never do that. i just show up after hours, and theres all ways some one else around so iam not in the shop alone.
Searcy 01-30-2007, 07:47 PM That Purple Heart puckup also uses 28 Neo magnets. The two black ones behind it are 5 string versions of the same pickup accept they use Alnico magnets.
The font I use as a logo IS one I have used for years because it looked cool to me. But I see it is growing popular now. I didn't know it was used on the Queens of the Stone Age cover. Those guys rock!
Cool looking bass Ben. I can't wit to see it finished.

Good deal. Rock on.
warwickben 01-31-2007, 05:24 PM i wanna start building basses and eurb's again.i stoped be cause of a few people i was makeing guitars for at the last seceond decied they didnt want them.and i had to eat some of the cost. i do alot of repair work for my guitar playing friends. after working on this idecied its some thing i love and hey i can make some extra cash off of it.
when i frist started makeing this bass it was cause i wanted a seven string but couldnt afford one. after awhile i was thinking of selling it after i play it for awhile to invest in tools to make basses ect for money. but as soon as i got pics of the pickup from Searcy i decied i am gonna keep this bass and never let it go.
and i see i am just kinda going on and on ; maybe its cause i cant wait till i am done with this. thank you for your kind words.
real men can play purple basses.
warwickben 02-04-2007, 11:32 AM i placed a call to stewmac and the rest of my parts are on the way to my house. i should be done with this bass in a few weeks once i get the parts.
does any one know where i can get a good seven string bridge with 3/4 spaceing. i know about hipshot a style but i was hopeing there was a cheaper bridge. i was gonna machine my own bridge but i dont want to have a brass colored bridge and chrome hardware.

not sure of the brand... but my 7 has 3/4" spacing at the bridge. you could email www.beebasses.com and ask Fred what he used on mine.

Take a look at these things.

I have used them and they are handy when you need a 7 or 8 string bridge for little money. They arn't listed on the web site but Dennis (the owner) stocks these in Black as well.
andvari7 02-04-2007, 03:38 PM real men can play purple basses.
Yup. Ever met Prince?
warwickben 02-04-2007, 03:56 PM Searcy thank you again, you keep on helping me out. should i call them, or should i order from that page.

You either need to call Dennis or write to him and ask about the black ones if that's what you want. Tell him Clint Searcy said to ask about black ones. If you like the chrome ones just order them from his Guitar Parts USA web site. He's a cool guy.
Somebody say keep on rockin?
wilser 02-04-2007, 05:24 PM hey, hipshot has 7 string bridges with .75" spacing.
warwickben 02-04-2007, 06:11 PM i know hip shot has seven string bridges but i was hopeing for some thing slightly cheaper. iam trying to decied right now between the single string bridges or the hipshot.
GoatGruff 02-04-2007, 06:46 PM I love the Hipshot A's, they are great bridges. that would be my choice. I myself would go with brass also, not aluminum.
single string bridges are a neat concept. but IMO it seems the fact that there is less overall bridge mass, it can effect the overall tone. wether it changes it for better or worse, is all in the eye of the beholder i suppose. but in my experience a solid one piece bridge seems to have better string to wood transfer.
warwickben 02-14-2007, 06:38 PM iam getting a fretboard sent out to me, i have all the parts i need to finsh this bass minus the bridge which iam gonna order after i click post.
Searcy 02-14-2007, 10:03 PM What bridge did you finally decide on?
warwickben 02-28-2007, 03:37 PM sorry if u were trying to get a hold of me. some thing happen with my talk bass account. but any ways now iam a paying member .
this week has not been that good. monday i rushed home so i can do more work on my bass. iam at the point where i need to glue my head stock on. i spent no lie 2 hours working on my head stock, when i got done cutting the angle for the joint i realized i had been useing a template for a 4 string bass. no way i could use it. so now iam stuck waiting till i can find time to go get some more wood. i wanna that every one who has helped me out with this bass.
out of all my books they dont really explain how u should lay out the tuners can u guys give me some tips. like on spaceing ect. the basses/guitars i made befor were in line ,so i could just copy a fender or a jackson ect.
allso iam useing goth tuners is 9/16 the right size hole i need.
the basses/guitars i made befor were in line ,so i could just copy a fender or a jackson ect.
Searcy 02-28-2007, 08:58 PM Oh dude! That sucks!!
Well, take a break. The solution will come to you when you have cleared your head.
I have used the single string bridges and I can tell you that they sound just fine. You can always swap them later if you don't like them.
warwickben 03-03-2007, 01:21 PM thanks again . in the long run messing up the head stock works out for the better. iam gonna go all out and make it better then befor.
warwickben 03-17-2007, 04:31 AM the last few weekend things keep comming up stoping me from buying wood to finsh this bass. now this weekend happens and snow storm comes, iam stuck moveing snow and not cutting wood. o well i think iam just gonna wind up ordering some wood at this point.
eleonn 03-17-2007, 08:41 AM Snow storms? moving snow? Thats why I love to live down here!! :)
While we are drifting away from the topic (which is Bass Builiding may I remind you) Snow storms are sweet as hell when it comes to building, have yourself a coffee and go work in the shop ! besides Winter just makes us stronger, Summer comes and we appreciate it ! Eleonn.. didnt you once say you had trouble working on your Bass cuz the beach was too close? HAHAHAHHAA Hasta Luego!
Musiclogic 03-17-2007, 02:27 PM I consider myself lucky, I have a climate controlled shop. I remember the days of not beng able to work in the winter, it really sucked.
Ben, I have the utmost empathy for you, and hope you are able to get back to work on your bass soon.

warwickben 02-26-2008, 04:44 PM hey guys iam still alive. iam sorry i have not gotten back to this thread . i have had alot of problems in my life happen since my last post. death, sickness, and i got in a really bad car crash, wasn't my self for a while had memory probelms ect. then once i was my self again i hurt my hand really bad. was changing a muffler on my car and cut my thumb really bad, i had no feeling in my hand for weeks after. it hurt to use power tools since i hurt my right hand.
any ways iam going to start working on my bass again.
i dont have much left i need to make a head stock my folks moved my stuff around and lost the one i made.
