VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : G&L's "temperature sensitive"?
Marley's Ghost 01-31-2007, 06:13 PM Just brought my SB2 back from the bass tech. He suggested I ditch the gig bag and get a hard case, cause he claims they are very "temperature sensitive", and necks are more prone then other bass brands to need adjustment after being exposed the elements. I never had a problem with my L2K, and my SB2 sat in the car in 30 degrees and seemed to be fine after I brought it inside. Is this guy trying to gaslight me?

Sounds like nonsense to me! My SB-2 has as solid a neck as any bass I've owned apart from my old Carvin! Maybe he's just commenting on the fact that the neck on an SB-2 is abnormally skinny...though in my experience (again using the Carvin as an example), skinnier necks don't neccesarily mean weaker necks! Sounds to me like he's just trying to sound smart! (like he knows something you don't know!)
It's possible he's talking about the issue that earlier G&Ls had (in the early 80s) with necks that were prone to warpage- they changed the design early on though so this is no longer an issue...

He said that with a straight face? :eyebrow:
quickervicar 02-01-2007, 09:11 AM Just to muddy the waters, I've found my SB-2 to be very sensitive--not to temperature, but humidity. As it dries out in the winter months the neck will require a truss rod tweak to straighten it out. No warpage, just bowing. My ASAT isn't nearly as sensitive but it does have a hair more meat in its profile.
Gigbag vs. case shouldn't make much difference either way. Now, in extreme cold a case will provide better protection for a short trip in a car, but the finish is the most crucial thing in that regard.
What's that I smell???
BS!

No, that is called a "seasonal adjustment". Perfectly normal, considering it is made out of wood.
And this tech is full of bullstuff... He knows not of what he speaks and I wouldn't give him another dollar of mine, if I were you.

What a load. :rollno: A certain player I know recently flew to Japan, Korea, Guam, and back to California with an SB-2 in a hard case and only needed slight tuning tweaks where the guitar players were having all kind of fits due to the changes.
The case got the crap beat out of it though.

That'd be Wanda, I reckon...

Oh, I agree totally. This is what I expect to have happen, it's just a bit strange that my SB-2 is much more sensitive to this than my ASAT or the L2K.:hmm:
Willem 02-02-2007, 05:27 PM maybe it's just because it's a different piece of wood:)
M.R. Ogle 02-05-2007, 09:23 PM Well, I had an early SB-2... loved it... but one time I was playing outdoors (at a beachside patio party in SoCal) and, I'll be daggoned if the thing didn't pick up about 1/4 inch of ""action" out there in the coool breeze. It was still playable, but I sure noticed the neck picking up that amount of relief... so I had to laugh when I read this post, and it just happened to be an SB-2 that you were talking about.
I actually owned one, and I noticed that, Yes.
quickervicar 02-06-2007, 09:04 AM ...and that is why I grabbed the ASAT when onstage at a large festival when a thunderstorm rolled through and dropped the temp about 10 degrees in 5 minutes.
