I thought i might add... I've heard some of your views on gear....i would like to hear you talk a little more about your thoughts on types of basses ,and strings, amps, cabs that you prefer and/or dislike etc... Also, it would be cool to hear you talk about what was most important to you as far as shedding and learning goes before and even after you actually got educated in music theory etc. Just thought i might tell you what i would like to hear you talk a little more about. And the improv, live practice thing with narrative was very cool and informative. Thanks for sharing.

and while we're all waiting for my host company to sort out their mess.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsYwLFXlDSo

an old friend of mine from London came to NYC, came to a gig I was doing, we went out for sushi, beer, beer, beer, and a little more beer...... and this was the rather messy result. I pissed myself laughing as me and him used to jam in my garage in south london when we were kids, and it had been a super long time that we had got to hang out. I find it funny, but it's probably my sick sense of humor.... and as you can see by the way me and my girlfriend are freezing our asses off it's WINTER! in NYC.

check him out at www.darrenaltman.com and at http://www.myspace.com/centrelinemusic

him and his sax player are coming to NYC to record an album that I'm producing, so after many years of not getting to hang out I think we're making up for time.

I have been reading this forum since its creation, and although i've haven't posted much, i have found it to be extremely inspiring.

The podcasts are great, and i know i am learning lots of stuff as someone who is thinking more and more about playing bass professionally.

I know it's important to develop your own sound, and have your own voice, and everything, but i am extremely tempted to tune my bass EADGC in order to try to practice some of the things you play.

I am also amazed at the bass' community these days, this along with Vic and Steve's bass vault are just amazing things to have for young bassists like me.

Anyway, thanks a lot for the work you put into this, it keeps me practicing.

sorry it's been a while with the 4th episode of the podcast series. I've been in the studio in NYC, then left straight for Austin. I've been here for the past week rehearsing and working with 4 new artists, and will play 5 shows next week at the south by south west festival here.

In the last episode I mentioned an audition for Warner Brothers artists peter Cincotti. I actually got the gig and am playing the first show with him tonight with no rehearsals. So it's been nuts learning all this music for him and the other 4 artists, hence the lack of a 4th episode.

I'm on it though!!

I have a record date tomorrow in dripping springs, but should be able to record a new cast on monday before the week starts getting crazy again.

Just came across this the other day, and so far I've only made it thru the first and part of the second. I really like what you're doing! I'm going to vote in favor of not talking about equipment unless it's specific to the topic about the music you're discussing. As a long time bass player, it's good to be reminded that there's more to listen to than just locking with the drummer. Obviously this is important, but what you play can add to (or subtract from) the overall sound of the band. Thanks for doing this.

Cool! Can´t wait!

I would like to hear your thoughts about tone and timbre and how you use that in your playing. In my ears your tone and phrasing is a little reminicent of Kurt Rosenwinkel and other modern jazz guitarists. You know, very precise tone and touch and it would be cool to hear your thoughts about that.

Any chance of us hearing another excellent podcast in the near future?

Maybe talk about how you approach being melodic/lyrical within fast moving passages (extreme tempos and/or quick and difficult chord changes)? Perhaps some production techniques? Or some recent music you've been listening to that you'd like to share.

New Podcast coming tomorrow!!!

janekbass
09-14-2008, 08:48 PM
I've finally got my own online store happening!

you can find it at www.janekgwizdala.com

right now I'm posting live concerts that the band has played in the recent past. They were recorded on anything from an iPod all the way up to some serious high end gear, and I've "mastered" them and processed them to 256Kbps MP3's in a zip file for you to download. All tracks that are available have a 96kbps 30sec preview for you to check out before you buy.

Downloads are per set. $4.99 per set, $8.99 fro a bundle of two sets, and $11.99 for a bundle of three sets. Sets average about 60 mins of music, with some being around 70. Once you make a purchase you'll be sent a password that unlocks the zip files.

For everyone who couldn't make it out to a gig because you live in Tokyo, Sydney, London, Dayton, Seattle or capetown..... these are for you! Bringing you right inside the club to the gig.

All MP3's are tagged with metadata so they load straight into whatever media player you use.

Please give me any feedback you can as this is a brand new thing for me, and I'm sure there'll be things to work out along the way.

Easy,

Janek

Sorax
09-14-2008, 09:58 PM
Awesome Janek! Will be checking them out as soon as my housemate gets home with his credit card (hehehe). Any sets in particular you think had some cool moments?

janekbass
09-14-2008, 10:10 PM
I really dig the second set with the trio with adam rogers and sean rickman, and there was some incredible playing on the lager ensemble sets with gregoire and randy brecker. its' really hard to pick.... with only 5 sets up there right now....

I'm going to add more as I get them and as I edit them and find nice musical moment where the band are really hooking up.

But there are 30 sec previews up there to give you a good idea of what you're getting, and I'll make sure I do that for all subsequent shows I post.

Easy,

Janek

Sounding good.

There's something about recordings of live and improvised sets that just does not come across in studio recordings, even if it's exactly the same musicians doing exactly the same thing.

Did you record these in the same fashion as the 55bar recording? I was particularly fond of the sound of the simple recording setup you guys used for that.

Mark

janekbass
09-15-2008, 02:59 AM
all of the bootlegs I post have been recorded in a similar simple stereo setup.

I love the vibe of a live bootleg like this, and I'm really excited to bring you guys some great live moments for download over the coming months.

One thing I should mention is that once you've made your purchase on the site I get an email notifying me that you've bought a download. I will then send you an email with the link for download and a password for your selected sets. I'm on Pacific time in Los Angeles right now and will do my best to forward the information to you no later than 8 hrs after your purchase. This is until we program an automated system to do the leg work for me of course........

hey janek,
was thinking - i know you've touched on a bit in your podcasts - but i would love to hear you demonstrating playing over some standards, just to hear how you approach it, also, would love to hear you explain and demonstrate some things like motific development over standards. most of the playing i've heard you do is over fairly modern jazz tunes, would love to hear you go over some more traditional style changes and styles in your podcast! just a suggestion/request. thanks again for what you do!

BoulderBrow
02-22-2009, 03:43 PM
Hey,

I'd be interested in how you approach standards also, particularly giving a voice which is suited to electric bass - I find a lot of the stuff I transcribe from brass and piano sounds good on upright bass but it's almost like the electric bass is too clean sounding to sound hip whilst playing over standards.

One thing I really like about your 55 bar solos is the consciousness of the other players to help build the solo and provide a good pad , in some cases, to solo over.
I find when its time for a bass solo in standard jazz, everything drops out leaving you alone to muddle through changes which the audience can't hear, leaving them free to go to the bar!

Just listened to the podcast in the car (and subsequently bored my sister half to death explaining the 4 over 5 polyrhythm when Live at the 55bar came on :P ), and really thoroughly enjoyed this one. I think the emphasis on time was really pertinent. It's interesting to think how feeling is created and expressed by things such as articulation, and perhaps more implying certain things than spelling them out.

The Art on Earth thing fascinates me and I can't wait to see it happening. I guess something that gives iTunes an advantage is its presence in popular culture, and the easy availibility of things like vouchers. I dig that Art on Earth definitely seems to be about artists and art.

Thanks man!

Hello,

I was wandering if I could get some simple advice.. I've been a gigging bassist for 2 years.. I am not a technical person, but do want to sound professional. I don't trust the guys in the music shop, they seem to do their best to make me feel stupid and naive and can be quite patronizing. I need some guidance!

I have just bought my first pedal. (the Boss bass equalizer) I use a modest £300 amp (without an equalizer) I'm getting quite a boost but haven't stuck on a particular sound just yet.. I was interested in a sansamp bass driver DI, but the equalizer was cheaper and I heard it basically does the same thing as the sansamp...

Is this true? I basically want a clear bouncy bass sound like the Smiths, or similar to Kings of Leon, Klaxons..

Is the fact I have a modest bass amp hindering me already, or do the pedals take you there even with an amp like mine?

I screwed up towards the end of the podcast.

when I start talking about approaching Minor tonalities from a half step below using diminished I say that the first tonality is C minor, when in fact it's C# minor. It get corrected pretty fast on the podcast, but I thought I'd just add the correction in here if anyone had any problems with it.

Hi, Janek!

Great podcast, as always.

I have an addition in how to use the diminished arpeggio. I´m not that good discussing music theory in english, but I´ll give it a try...

A neat sounding way to use the diminished sound over a E7b9, is to use those those diminished argeggios from E, G, Bb and D#. These are the four scale steps of the dimished scale that are "left over" when you only play the root, the third, the fifth, the seventh och the flat nine och the half-whole tone diminished scale. Creates a more modern and dramatic sound which might not fit in the gypsy style of jazz from the podcast... Anyway, you probably know this, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Take care

Cheers- it's a pleasure to listen to, and I appreciate the time you spend on it. It's like getting to pick your brain a bit without having to travel to NY to bother you!

I sent it out to about 30 people earlier today- I've heard back from about half, who all said they were bookmarking it.
