So hypothetical: If I had two Digi 002 racks, could I use them together to get 8 channels of simultaneous?

You can record 8 channels with just one 002r. You would need to basically slave one off the other to get 16 channels, which you cannot do. The 002 has and adat in but not adat out. You can record 16 channels simultanously with the 002 and some sort of 8 channel converter with pres such as an focusrite octopre. If you didnt need the pres you could adat in a converter like an apogee rosetta 800 or something. If all you wanna do is 8 channels at a time youd just need 4 more pres for your 002.

How would one get 4 more pres? Are there expansions you can buy?

Hi,

Last I knew, you could not hook more than one 002r to a machine, but check digidesign.com concerning this one.

As far as pre's go, anything that can convert analog to 8-channel ADAT lightpipe would work.

Check out the Presonus Digimax LT (or the Digimax FS):

http://presonus.com/digimax_lt.html

or the Behringer ADA8000:

http://www.behringer.com/ADA8000/index.cfm?lang=ENG

or this product from SM Audio:

http://www.smproaudio.com/PR8MKII.htm

RME has solutions for this, too: http://www.rme-audio.com/english/index.htm

zzounds.com carries many of these, but you can do a search for other retailers.

you can record up to 18 inputs (8 analog, 8 lightpipe and 2 s/pdif, but clocking becomes important. 16 is no sweat...) at a time on a 002. 8-channel lightpipe pres can be bought for reasonable prices, check out Behringer ADA-8000 or Presonus Digimax LT...

002 has a lightpipe out too, which can be used to expand your outputs...

I use and recommend PT. so easy to use...

Currently, you cannot connect more than one Digidesign interface in any combination to the same computer. For example, connecting a Digi002 + Mbox2 will not work.

You can use all 18 inputs at once at 44.1k or 48k, but you do need to keep one master clock. (At 88.2k and 96k, the lightpipe connection is inactive.) If you have a 2 channel A/D convertor going to the SPDIF connection on the Digi002R that also has a word clock out on it, you can run that word clock out from the 2 channel A/D convertor to the 8 channel A/D convertor and have Pro Tools clock to the SPDIF input. I've set up several studios this way with the Apogee Rosetta200 and Rosetta800 convertors.

The Digi002R has both Lightpipe in and out.

Any mic pre with a balanced line out can be run to the Balanced Line in of the 8 analog inputs on the Digi002R.

Thanks,
Dan

 Uhhh...no....they're all right there. Do you own an 002 now or are you just looking to buy one?

I think what he wants to do is use 8 pres, though. There are 8 analog inputs, but only 4 of them have a preamp.

Actually, the 8-channel analog to ADAT converters that I suggested would give 12 preamps instead of the 8 he was looking for. He could just use 4 external mic pres to get signal to the other 4 inputs.

Ah gotcha.

I have the Behringer ADA8000 and its great for the money...Probably cheaper than adding 4 separate mic pres too...

The Mackie ONYX 800r is actually a very good choice for ADAT expansion for the $$$. There's also the MOTU 8-pre. I'd probably recommend the 800r over all those mentioned for quality and features/bang-for-the-buck though.

Another fantastic 8-channel pre with ADAT out is the Audient ASP008 (purchased one myself recently), though this one is a bit more pricey than all the other options mentioned.

Surprisingly, there aren't too many 4-channel options out there.

You can pick up another computer and run an 002 into another in series. This helps minimise strain on the computer, and you could have lower latency levels running say 8 channels on one computer and 8 on a another, whether recording or mixing down. I think if you ever tried to record on all available 18 channels with 002 on one computer you could probably do it but at the cost of second hand macs these days, if you have acces to a second 002....
