VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Wanted: Randy Jackson on Bass
funkygospel 02-11-2007, 02:04 PM I am a regular watcher of American Idol mainly for Ricky Minor and his band. The dude just tears up most of the covers they do on the show. I have heard ALOT of good stuff about Randy Jackson's bass playing but I have never heard him. Is there anyway that I can find some recordings or videos of him playing bass on the internet? Thanks!!
DaveDanger 02-11-2007, 02:07 PM You might start with some of his early work with Jean-Luc Ponty, the jazz violinist....check out his wikipedia article, I think there's a good discography there. He's a MONSTER!
starchild 02-11-2007, 02:16 PM Check out some stuff by Narada Micheal-Warden.
DWBass 02-11-2007, 03:35 PM Dude can definitely play! He's done a lot of fusion work and toured with Journey for a while. He segued into production and band leading for Whitney Houston and others. I would consider him the most qualified to be on that American Idol panel! Why Paula Abdul is up there critiquing folks is a mystery to me!
Randy is also Mariah Careys touring bassist and yes he's a monster of a player.

DWBass 02-11-2007, 09:14 PM that first jam is SLAMMIN!! Lovin' that bassline. Randy is where it's at, I gotta grab that album.I hate to burst your bubble but Randy didn't record that bassline! It was T.M. Stevens. Randy is posing on that vid! T.M. is also co-writer of that song and played on the other R&B hit from that same album titled "Tonight I'm Alright"!

I thought he was posing too on that video.
If that's TM he's doing one of the best Leon Sylvers impersonations I've heard.
:D

Hmmm.....we're both Feb.(13th) babies, love funk and R&B and dig just about the same music, basses, etc! We must be connected somehow! :)
JAUQO III-X 02-11-2007, 09:49 PM Those Bass lines are killin.

My oldest daughter and one of my brothers birthday is also Feb 13th.You see, we all are brethren in some way or form!
DWBass 02-11-2007, 09:55 PM Those Bass lines are killin.Back in the day, I was able to play that bassline on my 'pencil necked' 4 string Univox bass with guitar like string spacing! Forget trying that on a 19mm spaced Lakland! My hands would knot up like a pretzel! LOL!

Happy birthday DW! Mine is next week (19th.) I started playing Christmas 1975. We are surely from the same era.;)
Dr. Cheese 02-11-2007, 10:31 PM A great song that Randy Jackson recorded with Narada Michael Walden is Divine Emotions from around 1983.
DWBass 02-12-2007, 06:49 AM A great song that Randy Jackson recorded with Narada Michael Walden is Divine Emotions from around 1983.He also played on Narada's Victory album which had a hot song called "The Real Thing"! Excellent playing on that one.
jerry 02-12-2007, 07:52 AM He's also on the Billy Cobham albums 'Magic' and 'Simplicity Of Thought'. I first time I saw Randy was with Cobham in the late 70's, he was very young and very dangerous, even at that age. The stuff he plays with Mariah Carey on her unplugged concert is killer, her best stuff IMHO.
starchild 02-12-2007, 10:25 AM Hey, I'm born 1/22/65 which makes me a Aquarius also...ooops my bad astrology has nothing to do with this.:D
The Owl 02-12-2007, 02:20 PM You might start with some of his early work with Jean-Luc Ponty, the jazz violinist....check out his wikipedia article, I think there's a good discography there. He's a MONSTER!
He's also on a Billy Cobham album called "Magic" from about 1977.
slackdaddy 02-13-2007, 11:28 AM I don't have it in front of me right now, but I remember the first ever issue of Bass Player magazine had a column by Randy about being ready for studio work. I believe he wrote about going to do a session with Bon Jovi. I remember him writing about how many basses he took to the session, I believe it was 5. Anyone have this issue of BP? Please correct me if I am wrong but I am 95% sure of that.
Dr. Cheese 02-13-2007, 11:31 AM I lost my earliest issues of BassPlayer, but I remember when Randy wrote for them. I also remember Anthony Jackson writing a column in response about how he went from using multiple basses to only one.
slackdaddy 02-13-2007, 11:34 AM Also, I believe that first issue of BP was dedicated to soloing and had transcriptions of "Portrait of Tracy", "The Lemon Song" and one more. I need to find it again. I think the song Randy said he was recording with Bon Jovi was "Dead or Alive" but I could be wrong.
JAUQO III-X 02-13-2007, 11:44 AM The first issue of BP had Geddy Lee on the cover, the issue that discussed solo concepts was a few issues later.
slackdaddy 02-13-2007, 12:19 PM You may be correct about that issue but I am pretty sure that the "Art of Soloing" issue is where Randy Jackson talks about that Bon Jovi session. Do you remember that?
JAUQO III-X 02-13-2007, 01:07 PM You may be correct about that issue but I am pretty sure that the "Art of Soloing" issue is where Randy Jackson talks about that Bon Jovi session. Do you remember that?
I remember that issue and Randy's column.
jerry 02-13-2007, 04:23 PM Randy also did a instructional video, I have it buried around here somewhere. At the end of it there is some nice concert footage with Vinnie Colaiuta that should make its way to youtube, you would think.
MonetBass 02-13-2007, 04:46 PM He toured with Journey for their Raised on Radio tour. (I thought he played on the album, but it was Bob Glaub.)
Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiUcRTqrLJM
fivestringer555 02-13-2007, 05:23 PM If you want to hear him solo, listen to "Rhythms Of Hope" on Jean Luc Ponty's "Mystical Adventures".
Bobbo 77" 02-13-2007, 05:52 PM I think Randy played on Frankie Beverly and Mazes' "Back in Stride Again"
Bobbo 77'
JAUQO III-X 02-13-2007, 06:12 PM I think Randy played on Frankie Beverly and Mazes' "Back in Stride Again"
Bobbo 77'
He's also on the CD Silky Soul by Franky Beverly and Maze.

+1 :bassist: i saw that tour. great playing all way 'round.
bassist15 01-16-2008, 08:54 PM He's also on the Billy Cobham albums 'Magic' and 'Simplicity Of Thought'. I first time I saw Randy was with Cobham in the late 70's, he was very young and very dangerous, even at that age.
What kind of bass was Randy playing with Cobham then?

Check Randy out in this video with Mariah Carey. This is the one of the finest tones that I have ever heard from a Stingray 5, I mean ever! FWIW, I also remember hearing from Roger from Genz Benz that Randy was using a Genz rig for this show. Killer groove and feel from Randy as per usual.:D

20db pad 01-16-2008, 09:25 PM Randy's a brilliant and under-rated bass player with a long history and a lot of album credits under his belt.
There's a 80's pop hit from Aretha Franklin called "Jimmy Lee" that has a great performance from RJ on bass. He also did Madonna's "Like a Prayer" - the tune has an octave-type of effect on the bass guitar track. He also did the "Raised on Radio" tour video feature from Journey when he hit the road with them - "I'll be alright Without You" is a standout cut.
Honestly, my fave track from Randy is the synth-bass part he played on Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know".
Basshole 01-16-2008, 09:42 PM Check Randy out in this video with Mariah Carey.
Tasty. I didn't know Randy could play like that.

Choad, great clip! Randy gives definitive proof that when folks say an SR5 isn't versatile, the problem is with the player, not the bass!:smug:

Barkless Dog 01-17-2008, 05:55 AM He's also on a Billy Cobham album called "Magic" from about 1977.
I saw that tour. He was a bass monster.
He replaced Ralphe Armstrong in Jean Luc Ponty's band I believe
Baryonyx 01-17-2008, 06:38 AM The man can certainly play! Don't DM make him a signature string?
bottomzone 01-19-2008, 08:22 PM If you want to hear him solo, listen to "Rhythms Of Hope" on Jean Luc Ponty's "Mystical Adventures".
+100!!!!! One of my favorite solos of all time! I was blessed to see Randy play with the Jeff Lorber Fusion in concert back in the 1980's. HE WAS SICK!!!!!!!!!!!! He also played some killer grooves with Tom Coster on the T.C and Did Jah Miss Me? CD's.
A Groove is a Terrible Thing to Waste!
Sounbwoy 01-20-2008, 03:51 PM He also played on Narada's Victory album which had a hot song called "The Real Thing"! Excellent playing on that one.
+1!!!
My favorite Walden album!
Randy has always been one of my main influences. :)
I would not begin to say that I'm the same league as you DW, and the estimable Dr. but my b'day is Feb. 4th. Maybe one day we can link...
Boss Bass 01-24-2008, 12:46 AM One of my favorite records by Jean-Luc Ponty, "Mystical Adventures", has a song on it called "Rhythms Of Hope". A couple of other folks have already mentioned this as well on this thread. Randy played on the entire record, but takes a marvelous solo on this song.

I would have to spend many hundreds of dollars to gather all of the published recordings Randy has played on! He is one of the best.

He did a series of columns in the first few years of the magazine. The Bon Jovi session was the solo Jon Bon Jovi record which doubled as the "Young Guns II" soundtrack (remember "Blaze of Glory"?).
One of my favorite recordings he did was Ernie Isley's "High Wire." Probably hard to find now.
