VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : My First Attempt At Portrait Of Tracy - I Expect To Be Lambasted For This
BassGod 02-11-2007, 06:56 PM I finally decided to attempt this monster of a song. This is my first attempt, and to be honest, I found this song to be pretty difficult to learn. I know I have the very last chord wrong, and there are a few other patchy parts. But I'm still working hard at it.
Anyway, please listen, and leave a comment. I'd rather not hear "you suck", true though that may be! ;) Constructive criticism is welcome as always.

JAUQO III-X 02-11-2007, 07:10 PM That's a very nice first attempt,what ever you do just don't get discouraged,I couldn't have done better.
Jay Terrien 02-11-2007, 07:43 PM The most important thing is that YOU ARE TRYING TO LEARN THIS PIECE!! :)

Mark Wilson 02-11-2007, 07:58 PM I thought it was very good!
A ton of treble though. And, your last chord, but you know that.
Keep it up!
rockwarnick 02-11-2007, 07:58 PM great job, its always a good thing to learn such beautiful songs. for that last chord i like to hold B and E down (9th fret, D & G strings) with my index finger and hold my pinky just above the 13th fret to hit the harmonics. you understand what i mean.
crazyfish 02-12-2007, 11:58 AM I've watched dozens of trainwrecks of people "performing" this on youtube and this is way, way better than every one of them. Great job on your first attempt!
daveyfunk 02-12-2007, 12:08 PM great job...i remember learning this. i learnt it from notation though, didnt transcribe it myself. did you transcibe this?
13th fret? i thought the last chord was on the 12th...might be wrong though, haven't played it in a long while
4-string Steve 02-12-2007, 12:10 PM Wow, that sounded really good, and it's better than I could ever do. Graet job!
fcleff 02-12-2007, 12:21 PM I don't think that you need to worry about getting discouraged. That was a very good effort. I have to agree with what other posters have said, so keep all that in mind. Consider the timing and FLOW of the piece as well. Your rhythm is really (understandably) shaky. Take the piece section by section and work on getting the rhythm perfect. Then put each section together and get the flow of the piece. Good job.

darkblack99 02-12-2007, 03:20 PM I think it's a splendid first effort as well.
One minor quibble...The 11th note of the intro sequence uses a G# (harmonic at 4th fret, E string) as opposed to a B (harmonic at 3rd fret, E string), prior to the ending 5-1 cadence.
To get the final chord (E Maj 7/#11), barre the top three strings at the 9th fret, and sound the harmonics at the 13th fret...Another flageolet tone.
I've been told Jaco may have overdubbed this part in the studio, for purposes of clarity...It takes a bit of work.
daveyfunk 02-13-2007, 01:10 PM yeah, that last chords killer
