--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I recently inherited my Father's bass. I was told he purchased it in the 30's and it was supposedly made in Czechoslovakia. The internal label says reproduction of Fecil Markneukirchen. Also says Neuersur (sp?) Beyer from 1723.
Dad played professionally in a quartet for many years. I play piano and played Saxophone in school, but don't know much about the string bass.
Aside from the personal value of the bass, is this a collectible instrument? What is an approximate value of the instrument? The sound is very rich and suprisingly powerful in our house. Any information on this instrument would be very helpful. It is in good condition considering the age and has a rounded back. Also has a bow and extra set of strings, and extra bridge.
Thanks in advance.

You sure that doesn't say FECIT MARKNEUKIRCHEN? Which is Latin for Made in Markneukirchen, which is in Bavaria (Germany).

Pictures are gonna help. You might also want to post this on Ken Smith's board/forum.

Aside from the personal value of the bass, is this a collectible instrument? What is an approximate value of the instrument? It's worthless. As a personal favor I'll take it off your hands for $300. I'll even pay shipping. :hiding:

Seriously, I think if you'll post some pics, you'll get some responses from some very knowledgeable folks here who can narrow things down considerably. It sounds like a nice bass.

I'm sure your are correct. When I have a minute I will send some pictures as you recommended. It's really just curiosity for now as the bass really looks nice next to my grand piano.
Thanks for your response.
