Thought I'd see what happened on this before I went and dropped $200 bucks on Single Coil pups for my RV5. I love this bass (3rd Sadowsky), but I still hunger to have a Metro Modern 5. I'm enticed by the reports by the tighter, more focused lowend, the pronounced midrange, and even indications of a slight Smith Vibe. I love the tone of the J-style Sadowsky's, and I've had MV5, UVRW5, and now an RV5 in most areas, but I still miss out on some low mids. If I don't get any bites on this, I'll just hold on to what I have and wait to get an NYC later on.

In addition to this, I should note that there are some slight bumps on the very end of the headstock. Other than that, the bass is in mint condition. For the record, the pics are from previous owner (Biker4Him, great TB'er), and the Sadowsky PJ5 is NOT mine......oh that it were. Anyways, thanks for lookin.

Bump it up. Judging by the lack of response, I'm guessing that the Modern 5's are indeed 'All that and a slice of bread'.

The only problem with that is that I would have to pony up more money to get into a new Modern 5, as I can't seem to find a used one anywhere. And that's money I DON'T have right now. If this doesn't work out, its time for some single coils. I love the way it plays, but those humcancelling pups are beginning to annoy me. Way to mid-scooped IMO.

Single coils should help quite a bit though.

I have singles in my Sadowsky. They give a little more bite, but I also like the humcancellings.

My GAS is containable at this point only because I'm gettin an Epifani UL502 tommorrow!!!! After that, its time for some single coils, unless someone bites.

Rob

I don't know the exact weight, but its definitely heavier than the MV5 and UVRW5 I owned prior. I did in fact get the UL502, and I'm waiting for the initial amazement to wear off before I can actually formulate a response (its that good). I might just have to go single coil and see if that fixes it. I'm hesitant to sell it outright only because I'm on the fence about letting it go at all. Just amazing playability.

HI

Yea. The epi head and cabs with my Sad's sound amazing. I have the humcancelling pickups in both. I have a 24/4 on the way with Nordstrand singles. I really dont see the disgust with the pickups you have but then again thats my ears talking. LOL. Best of luck. Hope you find your sound

Sorry, the 'disgust' part is really frustration at on the hand what the bass sounds like to me unplugged, and on the other what it sounds like plugged in (slightly compressed would be a better word than muffled). The note clarity and thickness are there, but I still think the singles would improve it. Besides, if this thread does go through, and I do get a Modern 5'er, then I can start focusing on putting money aside for the NYC P5 I'm dreamin of!!!

Ahhh, it all makes sense now! It's always good to own your dream bass no matter the cost. PM me about the UL502. I've been holding out for a while. Like you I own a DB750, and my other amps are a ABM500 and a wwMI100-8. I've been gassing for a 502 for a while now.

I owned this one too, and I should have kept it and done the single coil operation on her. I did have the frets re crowned, and that made a night and day difference from the way it was when got it. I'm the one that bought the tort guard for it, and that wasn't my cup "o" tea. But it's beautiful with the white, and a mint color would be the way to go, for sure.
It was 10.5 on my scale, and it was a fun bass to play.

But guys, what are you referring to here. a 502? And by the weigh ;).... It was 10.5#'s on my scale.

Can't ask for better feedback than that!! The 502 is a reference to Epifani's UL502 Head, which is getting its first real world test tonight with the very same Sadowsky. Can't wait.

Why does it matter how the bass sounds "unplugged"??? As for the muffled sound I can relate. I have a Roscoe with Bart pups/and preamp. The body is ash the neck is Birdseye maple. I feel the tone is a bit stiffled so I am about to pull swap a pair of nordstrand dual coils for the barts. This should broaden the tone and still punch through walls!

With Roger's basses, it matters a great deal IMO. Alot of credit is given (and rightly so) to how his unbeatable 2band preamp delivers that 'Sadowsky' sound, but IMME the natural resonance of his basses acoustically plays just as much of a role. His preamp simply enhances the great sound that is already there.

Can you guys throw a little wisdom in my direction? I've got the 3 band bart preamp in my Lakland. Single coil Fralin pickups, and I feel like the bart is kind of hollow sounding, and no matter where I set the dip switches for the mids, be it 250-500-750hz, it doesn't help. It doesn't have enough snap. I want to know my best bet preamp. OBP3, or Audere, JRetro, even a Sadowsky? Which would you guys recommend as a replacement.
I didn't want to start a new thread because you're already on this topic in here.

I can't say enough about the Sadowsky Preamp, especially with the Single coils in your Lakland, but my next option (if you feel you need the mid control) would be the Aggie pre. It sounds, to my ears anyways, similar to the Sadowsky but with an extra mid control thrown in the mix.

Find somebody with a sadowsky outboard pre, put your bass in passive and plug into it. I love my 55-94 like that. But I also love it with the bart pre for what it is ... just two different vibes. Do you find the sound to be "hollow" in passive mode? If so, its the bass or pickups are the "problem".

I guess I'm on the lookout for a Sadowsky preamp. I've been wanting to buy one for some time now. I really hate to start digging out the Bart from the JO. They did such a great job with the installation. But I'm looking forward to trying out the Sad. That should be pretty cool to have the tone controls back, in passive mode. :).... Thanks pickles

Actually, the Epifani Rig is starting to 'cure what ails me' about the Humcancelling's midrange response, and I think that when I drop the single coils in it will be just about perfect. That and tonight, just for ***** and giggles, I slipped a foam mute under the strings of the sadowsky, dialed in the neck pup, kicked in some bass, and it was 'insta motown'. There's always plenty more tones to be had without switchin basses.

However, Phil my friend, if you know anyone around town that wants my UL212, I might let it go for $700, so that I might get the UL410 in its place!!! I was thinkin that in line with my whole 'gear contrast' concept (darker bass+brighter full range amp=whatever the hell my hands and EQ want it to be) the UL410 would add another cool dimension to my setup. Plus I can add another UL112 to the one I got at a later date!!!!

If anyone is dying to trade their Modern 5, I"m your guy. Also, I have indeed put single coils in this RV5 and to me it made a huge difference. More punch/lowend (just 'better' would work here) and a much more vintage vibe. The only reason I'm considering this is that I have now made a long term Sadowsky plan for myself:
Metro Modern 24 in Ash/Maple: For all my slaptastic/fusion
needs
Metro PJ5 in Alder/Rosewood: Modern Jamerson anyone?
Metro PJ5 in Ash/Maple: Why the hell not, right?

Anyways, I'm only open to M24 trades at this point, because if I have to sell it it will probably be in the hands of Biker4Him before anyone else. The 'GAS' is strong in him.
Thanks for looking,
Luke

P.S. I'll throw in the Humcancelling Pups with the trade in case you decide the singles aren't for you.

Thanks for the love! Yeah, I bet if I sold it it would be snatched up no problem. The only thing is, if I sell it outright, I won't have the money to pay the difference for a new M24 :crying: . So right now, a trade is the only option. I see by the lack of responses that current M24 owners are very happy with their choice. I'm holdin out that there's a guy out there who's craving a more J-inspired sound in his arsenal. :hiding:

I'm glad you like the UL212. I'm even contemplatin gettin rid of my UL410 in favor of the UL310 and another UL112 to complete my 'Epifani UL112/Markbass Rig of Doom'.

If you're looking for low mid punch have you considered swapping out the neck J pickup for a set of reversed P pickups? The P's are known for their low mid punch and the reversed configuration helps tighten the low B - a versatile killer setup from the feedback I've read.

ElMon
06-17-2007, 12:56 PM
Actually, this bass has loads of Lowmid punch. My reasons for wanting an M24 are best said in this post:
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4299449&postcount=33

Its not that the RV5 is lacking for me (played it last night and it was killin!), its just that A) I've always wanted an ash/maple M24 and B) I know that I won't be able to resist the Metro PJ5 when it drops. If things go as planned, an alder/rw PJ5 would be a fine replacement for this RV5. I figure an ultra-zingy Modern and a deep and fat PJ5 would just about do it for fretted basses.

Then I have to start to deal with my GAS for a fretless Roscoe 5'er (thanks to BassoGruvitas!).

If I had the extra 600 bucks to throw towards a new M5-24, then my RV5 just might be on its way to you. As it is, I can't afford that, and have nothing else to get rid of unfortunately.
