Hey everyone,
I've been getting into some Incubus and Red Hot Chili Peppers groove lines, but there are two major techniques I have to learn. Seeing as how I've quit my local lessons after a few months (outrageous prices...), I'm wondering if any of you could tell me/ show me a video of how-to left-hand slap, and how-to use dead notes in a song (Can't Stop in particular. I know how to do a dead note, but I can't get it right while playing). Thanks!

I don't know how to do left-hand slap, whatever that might be, but doing deadnotes is simple.

It requires practice, of course, like everything else. Press your fingers on the strings, strong enough to mute them but not enough to fret a note. I bet you know how to do it. Now play slowly with a metronome and build speed. I learned it thanks to playing Get Up And Jump (I use the thumb to mute the E string, otherwise it's hard fretting the D and G string while muting the E. For me, at least. I know Flea uses his thumb for muting in that song, too).

Have you been to The Slap Bass Welcome Center (http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=298410)?

Some time ago I uploaded this short video (http://media.putfile.com/Left-hand-slap) trying to explain left hand slap. You'll see two different ways to do it and both of them should be practiced. Hope this helps.

And needless to say, Joe's "Slap Bass Welcome Center" is the best resource for all your slap needs! :hyper:
