What kind of music do you play? That makes a big difference in how you relate to the drummer.

In pop/rock, you should try to match up with the kick, since it (usually) provides the downbeat. In jazz, the conventional wisdom is to follow the hi-hat, though this may not apply if you have a showy drummer who likes to move the beat around to different parts of the kit.

In straight rock try to keep a steady quarter note or eighth note groove. Also, when playing, if the drum beat is steady, try to play the root, third, or fifth with the bass drum, it gives the song a more solid feel.
