Dave Grossman 02-19-2007, 06:48 PM Solo Bass Night III has now been confirmed for Friday, May 18, 2007 in Berkeley, California at the Freight and Salvage Coffee House.
The lineup will be the same as the first Solo Bass Night from last year.
Michael Manring
Jean Baudin
Jeff Schmidt
Dave Grossman
For more info, check out our web site at:
http://www.solobassnight.com/
The first Solo Bass Night came together in this forum when Jeff Schmidt posted a message here about Bay Area bassists getting together to jam. Jean Baudin and I had discussed the idea of an all solo bass show previously. When Michael signed on, it all came together.
Hope to see some of you guys there!

You can get them at the door. I was thinking it was going to sell out but now I'm not so sure. Shouldn't be a problem.
If by some miracle it does sell out by the time you get there (unlikely), tell them that you're a friend of mine and that I said I'd make sure you got in.

Dave Grossman 05-18-2007, 04:51 AM Can I be a roadie?
I think we're good. We're all playing through the same bass rig provided by Mark Wright of AccuGroove. Thanks though.

kserg 05-18-2007, 09:19 PM holy traffic batman...
stuck in traffic on the first way there
funkalicious101 05-19-2007, 12:19 PM you have no idea how bad i wanted to go.
i dont even have to ask how it was....
onewebfoot 05-19-2007, 12:28 PM Funk-101 - certainly you don't, but be confirmed, it was awesome. Blew my mind. Completely blew my mind, being my first Solo Bass event. My date for the evening loves music, but she's not "in the know" from a musician's standpoint. She asked a couple questions of Jean Baudin, regarding his monster 11-string, while he was warming up during intermission. I bit my tongue, as they seemed very simplistic, but Jean was an extreme gentleman and nurtured her interest, for which I am very grateful and admiring.
Can I quote Michael Manring of something he said to the audience later in the evening? "Bass is taking over." And it's striking that Mr. Michael was the only player performing with 4-strings at this particular event. Speaks volumes of the instrument's flexibility. I'd never seen a Hyperbass nor a Vinny 4 (fretted) gigged live before. And everyone was awesome. Blew my mind.
I took a few pics, emailed to Dave privately, as they are his doing and his right to use, at his disposal. Event completely blew my mind. (and LOL again at Jeff's laundry joke above...) (Edit - and Jeff himself was an extreme gentleman when it came to fielding a couple of very simplistic questions from me regarding composing...)
Edit - oops!! Correct that. Jeff performed a 4-string last night also. Sorry. Loved them all (artists - and their tools of choice). I forgot to itemize the instrument inventory in my mind ...)
funkalicious101 05-19-2007, 12:32 PM i guess i'll wait for next year.
unless they decide to take it on the road.
kserg 05-19-2007, 12:37 PM you have no idea how bad i wanted to go.
i dont even have to ask how it was....
Yeah, don't... :)
Thank you guys...
Dave, sorry my hi was so brief, but you looked busy and i had to run. Next time I'll stick around a little longer. You know, nothing complies a night of seeing and admiring something i could never do with a look and admiration of things i could never play. :) But nice meeting you and finally hearing you play. Looking forward to video, I missed about a half of your set due to traffic ( Very sorry man, comments above made by angry me seating in traffic on 880) but what i saw i very much enjoyed, thank you.
Jeff was great, and i bet it's time for you to fix your hair... :) Really enjoyed the set, thanks.
Jean, as usual, very very impressive and mesmerizing. I laughed to myself when you had to count how many strings your bass has, remembering that thread about your "12 string". ;)
And that other guy, Michael Manring? That was his name right? ;) :hiding: Impressive!
kserg 05-19-2007, 12:47 PM BTW, I really hope people seating behind me were NOT TBers. Talking none-stop during show is one thing, but telling a lady to shut up because she asked you (very nicely) to be quite during a show is just out of line. I really didn't want to say anything at time because it might have turned ugly and ruined the show for more people, but c`mon, some manners...
Dave Grossman 05-19-2007, 04:00 PM I took a few pics, emailed to Dave privately, ...
Hey, thanks again for the pics and thanks for coming! Here are the pics:

Dave Grossman 05-19-2007, 04:07 PM Dave, sorry my hi was so brief, but you looked busy and i had to run. Next time I'll stick around a little longer.
Yeah, sorry about that. I would have loved to have been able to spend more time talking to you and others that I met but I had an unbelieveable amount of gear to pack up. In addition to my pre-amp rack and stuff, I had brought all of the recording equipment which I had to wrangle. It took forever to get out of there but it was fun spending what time I could meeting people. Lots of really cute gals there too!

I'll probably post some youtube videos of my set for those who missed it. It is rough being the first one on since a lot of people did come later (likely due to traffic and dinner).
(I'm not sure I want to know how you were able to post to TalkBass whils sitting in traffic. ;) )
Thanks! Great to finally meet you IRL. For some reason, I expected to you to be banging on a cowbell. Not sure why. :p
- Dave
rosanne 05-19-2007, 06:13 PM NOOOOOOO I missed this show!
Drat!
And the Freight is only a few miles from me too.

Hehe, yeah, right after i left i thought to myself "maybe he needed some help, should have offered my services" but then I also though... "MMMMM burger" and my belly was in control...
+1 on the girls, quite few were very cute, you guys are rockstars! :smug:

Those things sounded very good of stage as well... I don't know about up close, i was seating by the coffee place (because IMO sounds is always better at distance). Great gear!
Dave Grossman 05-19-2007, 11:27 PM Haha, check it out. Every now and then, I check the USGS seismic activity maps for my area. I guess they picked us up last night ...

JansenW 05-20-2007, 09:48 AM Those Accugrooves really move the earth!
porteous 05-20-2007, 11:06 PM Can someone tell me that very recognizable song that Jean Baudin quoted right near the end of his set? I've heard it dozens of times, but just can't place it...
Whappo Grande 05-21-2007, 01:59 PM Can someone tell me that very recognizable song that Jean Baudin quoted right near the end of his set? I've heard it dozens of times, but just can't place it...
That was the theme song to the Pac-Man game.
oh yeah - I have to add props to mark wright @ accugrove. I think we played thru the most awesome bass rig last night - simply killer sound on stage- thanks mark!
The pleasure was all mine. Gettin ta hang with my buds & enjoy some slammin playing is always worth it. Of course the Jerk Chicken from the Jamacan resturent next didn't hurt either.
;)
Michael Manring 05-30-2007, 12:18 PM I'd just like to add my thanks to everyone who came out, to Mark for the awesome speakers and Dave for putting everything together. After so many years of chasing the solo bass dream it's a real pleasure to see it taking on a life of its own!
Whappo Grande 05-30-2007, 03:49 PM Michael, that new trio CD "De man ia" is KILLER bro!! I can't stop listening to it!
Between it & your solo "Soliloquy" I'm in hog heaven. Oink, oink...
Mark
Dave Grossman 06-09-2007, 05:44 PM I've posted some audio clips from my set at SBNIII and SBN1 at:
http://www.solobassist.com/davegrossman/audio/
Also, I finally got my video from SBN1 and posted it to YouTube at:
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=69773F12B6051479
This is an alternate camera angle which had better audio than the main camera angle which Jeff used. I think he mixed his direct audio with his video for his clips. I'm going to try that sometime for my video.
Ariane Cap was kind enough to videotape my set which I will post sometime.
Hope you like them,
Dave
Plantbrain 06-21-2007, 06:32 PM Since I am a frigging idiot, I miss not only the SF bass clinic, but this as well, any new dates for a possible get together?
Do another, set a date way a head of time, promote it(I'll do it!) and post here and get the word out.
Please?
You had fun right?
Traffic does stink but it's the Bay. Later is better.
Tom
