It is my pleasure to introduce David Ruby to our 'Ask A Pro' forums here on TalkBass.com. David brings a unique approach to the table, having studied with Ludwig Streicher, David Walter and Franco Petracchi. The focus of this forum is on the issues of german bow technique, along with the Ludwig Streicher method of playing the double bass. I will never forget when I first met David at the BassWorks 1994 Symposium in Canada which he organzied - he gave me an incredible opportunity as a high schooler: to play in a masterclass with Ludwig Streicher himself :)

David Ruby holds a bachelor's degree from from Juilliard where he studied with the late David Walter, and a master's degree from the University of Vienna, with Ludwig Streicher. He also holds a Diploma di Merito from the Accademia Chigiana (Italy), where he studied with Franco Petracchi.

David was prinicipal bassist with the Haydn Sinfonietta (Vienna), and the Heidelberg Chamber Orchestra. He's also held the prinicpal position with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet orchestra, the Saskatoon (Saskatchewan) Symphony, and the Charlotte Chamber Orchestra. He has been a soloist/clinician with music festivals around the world, including the Arizona Double Bass Symposium, the Memphis Bass "Thing", the International Society of Bassists Convention, and the Grand Teton Music Festival. He also served as managing director of the BassWorks International Double Bass Symposium in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1993-94.

Hey David!
Nice you could join us! Welcome! Where are you these days? What are you playing (what instrument now?)? It's a great bunch of people, these bassists. Again welcome to the community!

Thanks for the welcome Pat. Been here in Tampa for the past four years - performing throughout the state. I'm playing on two new instruments, both smaller solo Basses. The one I actually use a lot is a Chen Bass that was re-worked by K C Strings and is surprisingly powerful from top to bottom = a real joy to play!

Dr. Rod - I see you studied with Posta! What a great expereince that must have been - along with all the other great things you have accomplished. My regards to Thunder Bay - the Princiapal gig was the first I had just after graduating with David Walter at Juilliard - I see we have a doubel connection there!
- all the best,
David Ruby

Andy Zadrozny here. We met at the Saskatoon event in '93. You may remember me, or not.. You had invited me to the event the next year when Striecher was there and I've always regretted not going.

I have in my possession a French bass, no sticker, arguably 18th century that I'd like to find out more about. It was originally smaller, and at some point, possibly around 1800 was made larger. It's now roughly standard 3/4 size--a really amazing instrument. (see attachment)

Any advice on how to research its origins?
