does anyone know of an easy way to tab jaco's booklet that came with the dvd "modern electric bass". I cant read music. thanks

Why don't you just learn to read - that could be done in about the same time (an afternoon, maybe) and then you could add that to your list of skills.

i have two transcription books of his recordings and let me tell you if they were in tab i woukd have jumped off my roof by now,

notation is hard to get into but well worth the effort .Eg

reading notation =reading
reading tab = decoding

It's time to learn how to read music. This is the perfect time because you have motivation. It's not that hard.

^^^What they said. If you're at the point where you want to try to deal with Jaco's music, you're at the point where you should try to deal with reading music.

So does reading music. If you have never heard a piece of music and I hand you the tabs for it, could you play it correctly?

Reading standard notation makes life SOooooo much easier. Why do you think that guitar player anways has SN above their tabs?

Everyone has their own ways of doing things and I don't want to start a tab vs. standard notation debate, but I don't like tabs telling me where to play my notes.

I've seen pieces that I know written out in tab format and I've NEVER agreed with the tab. It has always directed me to play in an awkward position that suggests a strange fingering solution. I later found out that people were taking midi files and importing them into tab software. The software wasn't intuitive enough to know how to arrange the pitches into a logical position on the fingerboard. It's good for some people, but not for me.

I agree, that reading music is much easier than reading tabs, and the time that you would use to decipher what rythms to play the tabs in, you could just as well use to learn reading standard notation.
To get back to your question, I wouldn't recommend even trying to get a hold of the booklet. I have it, and it is floating with wrong notes and rythms. It can be a guideline, but most of the time it is just confusing and annoying. I would recommend trying to listen to what he's playing and transcribing it yourself. Perhaps with a program that can slow down, without changing pitch.
