Wow... I've wanted this as long as i can remember, its always been a dream to have my own business and whats more manly then creating something with your own two hands ? And then i fell in love with bass...

And since i was about 12 I've wanted to be a Luthier... Now, I see an extremely reputable college in my area (Musicians Institute - MI) is offering a Certificate and Bachelors degree program in Instrument Craftsmanship...

I am so, so tempted in doing this... I would gladly devote my life to creating instruments if i knew one day i could sit down and start a project and end with something like an FBB, Fbass, Nordstrand or a Jerzy Drozd...

Towards the end id sell out and make fender copies tho

:hiding: :ninja:

But I've been looking into this more and more... and... it seems like a dream come true.

So who inspired you to become a luthier? What were your ambitions and where are you now?

I guess id just like to hear some stories... if i were just a local guy doing this and paying the bills id be plenty happy.

i have heard of people being able to apprentice with a luthier. i know someone that basically taught himself by just doing and is now busy as heck building. is there a shop or music store where you can work doing setups and minor repairs? have you talked to any luthiers that you know/respect to see how they got into it?

There aren't any in my area that i know of that aren't big builders... Example would be Carey Nordstrand, right by me.

But Im really looking forward to attending Musicians Institute, its a pretty well known music school and they churn out some amazing students.

Unfortunately you can only get a Certificate in Guitar Craft, however if you chose to say, major in bass. You could get a Bachelors, or any other instrument of your choice.
