SOLD
Up for sale is a 2005 MIM Fender Jazz Fretless in Midnight Wine with Dimarzio J pickups and a black Gotoh 201 bridge.
With the Dimarzios, this bass gets a very full and authoritative sound, and unlike the stock single coils, you can also solo either pickup without hum since the Dimarzios are split-coil humbuckers in a J casing. With the neck pickup soloed, it has a throaty, almost fretless P Bass kind of tone, which is a nice bonus on a Jazz Bass.
The catch (so to speak): When I was changing the pickups, like a complete doofus, I put the neck pickup in the bridge position and vice versa and didn't even notice my error until I was all done and went to put a new black pickguard on, which obviously wouldn't quite fit because of the slight difference in pickup widths. I didn't feel like dealing with tearing it apart and starting over, so I tried to use a carpet knife to whittle the neck pickup hole on the pickguard a little bit larger to make it fit. The cut came out looking fairly jagged and I slipped and put a scratch on the pickguard right next to the neck pickup hole. Given that the pickups and pickguard are both black, you don't notice any of this from a few feet away, but it's fairly apparent on closer inspection. Personally, I didn't care that much because it sounded so nice with the new pickups (juxtaposing their positions doesn't seem to have had any negative effect on tone). But if you're picky about how your basses look, you may want to switch the positions of the two pickups and get a completely new black pickguard.
Note: I will also send the stock single coil pickups and the original white pickguard (which is still in great shape) along with the bass.
You may also notice in the photo that there are screw holes drilled on either side of the bridge for a chrome bridge cover. I have a chrome "F" cover and will include that in the sale too.
I should also note, in order to represent this as accurately as possible, that the nut was cut pretty deep. This might have been done because this is a fretless and you want the action low, but I've noticed that you have to be careful how you wind the strings on the tuners or you can get a bit of rattle on the open E and/or A strings. I have an extra string tree that I was planning to install on the E and A strings but never got around to putting on - and yep, I'll send that along too in case you want to put it on.
The bass is currently strung with Dean Markley Blue Steel extra lights. There is a bit of fingerboard scuffing from the rounds, but I haven't used them on this bass enough for it to be too severe.
Also includes original Fender gig bag and allen wrenches.
$300 shipped UPS Ground insured to the lower 48. PayPal and postal money order accepted. Prefer to ship to U.S. addresses only. For sale only - not looking for trades right now.
Here are the pics. As noted in my other current sale (P Bass Special), my camcorder doesn't take very good photos, so I apologize for the picture quality. NOTE: The seeming yellowish hue of the fret lines in the body closeup shot is just a color inaccuracy artifact of said lousy camcorder - the fret lines are not discolored.
For a sound sample, here's a link to a track from my last CD, in case you're curious how the Dimarzio J's sound on a Jazz fretless (albeit on a 128k mp3). On this particular track, I used TI flats on the bass with the neck pickup soloed (going for the "retro thump"). There was a little bit of processing with VST plugins going on too, of course...
