OK, I've got a question for anybody who cares to answer. I've got a Gretsch Junior Jet Electromatic short-scale bass. (I don't know what the exact scale length is, but it's the shortest scale bass I've ever played.) My question is this: Would it be possible to string this instrument with a quasi-baritone string arrangement? (Something like DGCF, etc.) Has anybody done this? (I know there'll probably be problems with the lack of tension on the neck, but...)

heh, you asked this more than a year ago. i have a gretsch too. its a 30" bass. i don't see why you cant string it like that. go for it. i feel anything lower than the regular EADG is gonna be too floppy to play though.

Actually a lot of baritones are a 30" scale, so that would work fine. Just loosen the truss rod so that the neck doesn't bow backward. I'd get some baritone strings and tune it BEAD or maybe ADGC. I bet that would sound great . . .
