VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Favorite Rush song...EVER...For you...
Mcrelly 03-26-2007, 09:54 PM I just watched the R30 Concert and they ended with Living In The Limelight and it got me thinking. "What is the best 'overall' rush song?"
I've liked "limelight" for a long time, but I've also been crazy about 'xanadu'.
any other thoughts??? taking into consideration bass, lyric and overall composition....
I'll turn this into a poll later....
Rimshot 03-26-2007, 09:59 PM I've gotta go with the one right before they say, "Thank you, good night."
Alvaro Martín Gómez A. 03-26-2007, 10:26 PM "La Villa Strangiato" is my all-time favorite rock instrumental.
ibnzneksrul 03-26-2007, 10:34 PM Subdivisions
ProfGumby 03-26-2007, 10:45 PM I have to pick just one, huh?
Probably Anthem...
However, Xanadu, La Villa Strangiato and Hemespheres are so close it is hard to tell.
And I have to comment, the sound on the Brazil stuff is unbelieveable! So much bottom end and mid out of Geddy's bass...I have seen them live probably 8 - 10 times and musically, I don't think they have ever sounded better.....
Sarbecue Boss 03-26-2007, 11:15 PM fly by night
Folmeister 03-26-2007, 11:18 PM Cygnus X-1 and Circumstances are tied for #1!
scottice 03-26-2007, 11:24 PM If I had to pick one... then mine has got to be Red Barchetta. When I hear it I want to drive fast. I can almost feel the wind whipping past me. What's better than a story from father to son about a car? Great stuff!
superbassman2000 03-26-2007, 11:54 PM For me, you just can't beat Tom Sawyer
The BurgerMeister 03-27-2007, 12:01 AM wow... xanadu, cygnus x-1, circumstances, la villa strangiato, freewill... so many good ones!
i'll say jacob's ladder. :bassist:
http://planetsmilies.net/vicious-smiley-1815.gif
distant early warning is my favorite Rush song.
dave64o 03-27-2007, 12:53 AM Wow, one?!?!?!?!? I dont know if I can pick just one.
If the gun is to my head and I have to pick, I'd probably pick either La Villa Strangiato or Natural Science.
Peter Squire 03-27-2007, 12:56 AM too many, too hard to choose.
so many eras with different flavours:
early rush - i really like Bacchus Plateau from Caress of Steel and By-Tor from Fly by Night
mid-rush - anything from Permanent Waves, but perhaps Different Strings and Entre Nous
late-mid-rush - Red Barchetta and Between The Wheels and Analog Kid
art-rock-rush - Emotion Detector, Presto and definitely The Pass
return-to-rock-rush : Between Sun and Moon, Dog Years, Totem, How It Is
so yeah, my favourite...
nataku 03-27-2007, 01:36 AM Leave that Thing Alone, if I had to choose one.
jomahu 03-27-2007, 05:40 AM definitely 'the spirit of radio.' that's the song that hooked me.
then of course, there's limelight, subdivisions...i really like kid gloves
....and driven is a drummer's dream....
saxnbass 03-27-2007, 05:46 AM OMG this is hard. Probably between Fly By Night and Passage to Bangkok.
Baryonyx 03-27-2007, 07:19 AM Prime Mover, Grand Desings, Mission, Time Stand Still and Force 10 all come to mind...hard to pick!
ProfGumby 03-27-2007, 08:25 AM too many, too hard to choose.

See, I had thoughts like that too....how can you pick just one, especially since their music is rather diverse...and all good...so I bit the bullet and chose Anthem as that is the one rumbling round in my skull lately...
But you pretty much nailed the best way to pick....
+100!
If I had to pick one... then mine has got to be Red Barchetta. When I hear it I want to drive fast. I can almost feel the wind whipping past me. What's better than a story from father to son about a car? Great stuff!
+1... It's my 9 year-old's favorite song of all time. We play it everytime we're in the car together.
scottice 03-27-2007, 10:53 AM +1... It's my 9 year-old's favorite song of all time. We play it everytime we're in the car together.
YAY!!!!!
MonetBass 03-27-2007, 11:06 AM The Trees.
I once wrote a paper based on it to exemplify personification. Got an 'A'. Yay, Rush!
TheCiscoKid 03-27-2007, 11:48 AM For me it has to be 2112 though Cygnus X-1, Different Strings, and
Countdown are close behind (as well beneath and between)
rushfan73 03-27-2007, 01:20 PM Driven from Test for Echo.
Killer bass sound on the album and live
The minute I think I can answer another great title pops up... I just can't do it!!!
rushfan73 03-27-2007, 01:44 PM This should of been a top 5 songs question....well, even that is hard to do. They all kick ass!
bassjamn 03-27-2007, 02:28 PM Redbarchetta for me
Mcrelly 03-27-2007, 03:06 PM I forgot, what?, about 'spirit of radio' but, that one really gets my adrenaline flowing!!!, but limelight is metaphorical for our physical/spiritual existance?? if your into that kinda thing... :D
darkfish01 03-27-2007, 03:08 PM i've always loved Spirit of Radio lyrically...
cheezewiz 03-27-2007, 03:51 PM Picking just one is tough, but I'd probably have to say "Red Barchetta".
Dave Siff 03-27-2007, 07:33 PM Picking just one is tough, but I'd probably have to say "Red Barchetta".
+1, and +1.
BassGod 03-27-2007, 07:36 PM Right now, I'd have to say Vital Signs, but that could change tomorrow.
Graeme
Ripper 03-27-2007, 08:06 PM i have to say i like train to bangkok... but as far as intros... no song can beat YYZ IMO
Vandelay 03-27-2007, 08:10 PM Spirit of the Radio
funkalicious101 03-27-2007, 08:36 PM right now?
probably hemispheres. but ask me again in a week and it will be different
MikeyB 03-27-2007, 08:37 PM Picking ONE is impossible for me.
But I'm going to put up "Cinderella Man" because it's one of my top faves that hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet.
-M
BassGod 03-27-2007, 08:37 PM right now?

That's a good one. The lyrics are very interesting.
Graeme
funkalicious101 03-27-2007, 08:42 PM Picking ONE is impossible for me.
But I'm going to put up "Cinderella Man" because it's one of my top faves that hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet.
-M
ive always had cinderella man in my top 5. not a very popular tune though
Thinkarogadum 03-27-2007, 09:06 PM I like A Farewell to Kings, every song on Hemispheres, Red Barchetta, Limelight, and +1 to whoever mentioned Witch Hunt!
By the way, I just watched the Rush Replay X3 DVD and it was extremely good, especially the Exit Stage Left concert. Not a bad song in that show! Highly reccommended.
funkalicious101 03-27-2007, 09:13 PM nevermind my hemispheres. im listening to presto, one of my favourite albums ever, and every song i hear i think "this one, this one is my favourite"
jenderfazz 03-27-2007, 09:47 PM Subdivisions.
basspraiser 03-27-2007, 10:13 PM There are "bad" RUSH songs?
bimplizkit 03-27-2007, 10:36 PM Red Barchetty
:smug:
WOW one 'huh?
just can't do it sorry
hemispheres
circumstances
freewill
cygnus x-1
all honesty i would probably have to say hemispheres for me, too many great tunes to say just one.
GROOVEjunkie 03-28-2007, 12:59 AM Tough one...
Suprised no one mentioned it, so I will:
Lessons off of 2112. From the fade in to the fade out, great tune. Beautiful fluid, melodic bassline, then heavy and great vocals!! (not to mention that sweet high hat fill)
"No, you didn't listen again!!!"
Red Wonder 03-28-2007, 11:35 AM I'm always partial to Everyday Glory.
Vital Signs is a very interesting song...I love the live version from Grace Under Pressure tour.
Tears is gorgeous.
funkalicious101 03-28-2007, 01:14 PM as of right now its The Pass. such a beautiful and inspiring song
subject to change in minutes
rushfan73 03-28-2007, 01:17 PM Earthshine is hard to beat!
Apocalypse Dude 03-28-2007, 03:20 PM Too hard to choose, but my top 3 are probably Xanadu, The Fountain of Lamneth and Subdivisions.
moogboy 03-28-2007, 03:34 PM Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Limelight, Xanadu, Closer to the Heart, everything off of there 'Feedback' cd. all of the Rush music that i have heard RAWCKS. if there are BAD Rush songs, tell me, i wont believe it until i see it.
Eric618 03-28-2007, 03:37 PM Subdivisions, Red Barchetta, The Trees, Closer to the Heart, Lakeside Park, Bastille Day, Vital Signs (bizarre tune!)... Oh man, I could go on and on and on.
Just found out they are playing 20 minutes from me on 7/29 this year. Luckily we weren't booked, so I reserved that night off. I WILL be there.
Thinkarogadum 03-28-2007, 04:17 PM Just found out they are playing 20 minutes from me on 7/29 this year. Luckily we weren't booked, so I reserved that night off. I WILL be there.
I'll definitely be at that show too. Hopefully they'll have the roof fixed over the pavillion by then.
Baryonyx 03-28-2007, 04:22 PM I've got a 12 row ticket in the front stalls to the Newcastle show on October the 5th! I'm really gonna get to see Rush! :D :D :D :D
ProfGumby 03-28-2007, 04:34 PM Yeah!
Rush will be in my old hometown early in September...I may have to catch that show and take my oldest son with me....that way momma can't whine....:D
BTW, I just heard some new stuff off the upcomming cd...pretty coooool. Kind of a modern version of the original sound....can't remember the name of the tune, but it was good!
Lot's of the old bottom end, guitar and less techo stuff...
:bassist:
Baryonyx 03-28-2007, 04:48 PM As long as they still write banging tunes, I'll listen, but I will concede that 1986-1991 were the glory days!
rushfan73 03-28-2007, 04:50 PM All Rush kicks ass, "Tai Shan" being the exception.
Eric618 03-28-2007, 04:52 PM I'll definitely be at that show too. Hopefully they'll have the roof fixed over the pavillion by then.Very cool!
I'm thinkin' everything will be fixed by then. Honestly, I don't even care, I just wanna see Rush again! :hyper:
jmorbita 03-28-2007, 08:30 PM Ok, my favourite rush song is Tears from 2112... it's a really simple song, but i heard that album for the first time like 16 years ago and still from time to time i find myself singing that song...
A farewell to kings was the first rush album i ever heard and some of the songs there are amongst my favourites too.
steve66 03-28-2007, 09:10 PM I cant pick one so Ill pick the one i am listening to right now - The Trees
kserg 03-29-2007, 03:29 AM I really like the bassline in "tears".
Petary791 03-29-2007, 11:51 AM The heart and mind divided into-- HEMISPHERES!
The whole "Cygnus" series is ridiculously awesome.
Quadzilla 03-29-2007, 07:12 PM Hemispheres...
73jbass 03-30-2007, 12:09 AM Camera Eye.
jay800 03-30-2007, 11:01 AM Hemispheres
Witch Hunt
Those who know what's best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves.
Musiclogic 03-30-2007, 11:46 AM There is no way to pick just one, especially since I've been a Rush Fan since '73 when my broter brought back he first "Moon" pressing of Rush. But "La Villa Strangiato" and "YYZ" always spring to mind, as my drummer and I always jammed these two at every practice. Hemispheres and Entre Nous are also there
Don W 03-30-2007, 12:40 PM My favorite Rush song is Circumstances, off my favorite Rush album, Hemispheres.
SGT. Pepper 04-03-2007, 08:23 AM I'll narrow it down to three...
1. Tom Sawyer
2. Subdivisions
3. Chemistry :)
bassybill 04-03-2007, 08:33 AM Early Rush - Anthem
Later - Spirit Of Radio, Tom Sawyer, , Limelight, Red Barchetta, Camera Eye
Later still - Big Money
No prizes for guessing my favourite album.
funkalicious101 04-03-2007, 12:40 PM wow has no one here heard of any albums past power windows?
presto, roll the bones and test for echo all have some awesome songs on them.
rushfan73 04-03-2007, 12:43 PM Don't forget about Limbo from Echo.
Bard2dbone 04-03-2007, 02:28 PM La Villa Strangiato, YYZ, Spirit of Radio, Circumstances, Subdivisions, Trees, Closer To The Heart, Free Will, Distant Early Warning, Time Stand Still, Manhattan Project
What kind of wierdos are you people who can actually pick ONE?
Back in High School, I turned in several English papers on the work of the poet, Peart. And the teacher didn't twig to them as rock lyrics until another student, who had done the same thing, sang her a piece of 'Hemispheres'. After that she specifically excluded rock lyrics from poetry papers.
