Hey David I'm a greenhorn with a bass guitar...now that I got the courage to go & buy 1, I got a major headache of choosing the best 1 for the beginner...can you please tell me what I should see as a buyer...I've narrowed my selection down to these two choices...Thanks...

List:
1. Yamaha RBX170 RBX series
Bad: I've found out that I have to cough up more cash to get a small amp & carrying case, etc...
Good: I've heard that it's v.reliable & last long

2. Legend RB 400 bass guitar combo pack
Good: Legend made guitar, free amp, free tuner, free case, free stand, I've heard that it's reliable, super cheap @ $.340 a piece

Bad: ???

I’m a believer that equipment is important but some rely too much and are too concerned to get just the right bass or the perfect sound processor or amp. The sound will in the end come from your hands. Having said that, there are many good starter basses to choose from. I have not had the time or opportunity to check out a lot of the new starter basses out there but there are probably many good basses to choose from in the price range you are checking out. Many of my students have Yamaha, Ibanez or Fender Squire jazz or precision basses. The style in which you play in will probably have some influence on the bass you choose. I have noticed the Ibanez basses have thin necks and work well for slapping. Talk to as many people as you can about different basses before you buy. Although not always possible (mailorder), it’s helpful to get your hands on the bass and play it before you buy.

I play basses custom built by Ron Blake. Although it may be out of your price range, if you’re ever interested in checking him out I’ll give you his info. Just check out my website: daveoverthrow.com and send an email and I’ll reply with his info.

Peace,
-Dave

My first bass was a Yamaha RBX170 and for it's price, it's amazing!

It sounds as good as many basses that cost four times more! Only basses I played that sounded as good or better were such that go for around 400 euro and more. :)
