Anyone out there know when Phil started using the Modulous bassess in the Dead? Around what albums? And on how much material?

Also, when they did "Box of Rain" live, did Phil play the bass parts and sing or the acoustic guitar and sing?

According to this bio (http://www.philzone.com/leshlinks/phil-lesh-bio.html), he started playing Modulus in the early 80s, so my guess is that he started recording with Modulus on the "In the Dark" CD. Bob Weir also played Modulus guitars in the 80s.

What album can i listen to that has Midi bass? i just got the 'Grateful Dead Gear' book, and i saw a picture of Phil with a Modulus bass and a Pitch to Midi converter literally taped onto the bass. the Midi unit was a Roland GK-1 i believe, and i also have never heard the Grateful Dead play anything.

I don't know if he ever used the Midi bass on any studio albums. Possibly on "In The Dark" or "Built To Last," but I'm not sure about that.

The Dead are best approached through bootlegs anyway, so your best bet is probably to find a knowledgeable Deadhead with a large library, as they could burn you some shows where he used it. I believe he was experimenting with that Midi setup in the late eighties/early nineties.

Phil's a great musician. My favorite era is '77 - '78 when he was still using "The Godfather," his heavily modified Alembic.

Phil aways played bass during box of rain.
The midi bass is a ken smith which he only used during the space part that followed the drums section of there second set.
A good place for music is the live music archive.
As Far as I know after he picked up the modulus it became his primary instrument.
The only studio I know of is Infrared roses which is a compilation of these space jams.
