Under normal circumstances anybody should be able to play fingerstyle with minimal discomfort - and over time your fingertips will develop callouses.

If it's your job that's keeping you from playing bass, then maybe you should see a doctor? Maybe some hand excercises would be a good thing to do.

stretch your fingers before you play, and do a 1234 exercise using a finger per fret, and alternate index and middle finger on your right hand. Keep at it, soon it will be natural.

Have your bass setup properly and practice NOT pressing too hard.

If you can get your action reasonable and your touch light, then you may alleviate some of the stress on your fingers.

Get a teacher too, if you can. Someone who can show you where your technique may be causing you pain and ways to fix it.

For me it's about "Touch". Try alternating your index and middle finger on the right hand and try hitting the strings with a lighter touch. Let your amp and bass controls take care of the volume. You don't need to hit the strings as hard as you think, also don't press too hard with your left hand either. A light touch when mastered is very effective and you don't have to develop big thick calluses, you just need a little toughening of the fingertips which will come with time and practice and of course a good set-up really helps as well.....Take it easy.
