I have some gigs requiring air travel, i'm reluctant to use a the traditional hard case, or even worse a flight case to lug around. can you guys recommend options available for high-end protective gig bags?

https://www.goincase.com/products/detail/slim-bag-cl56065 is what I've got - an In Case bag, that I've checked my bass in a few times and had no troubles at all as yet. the Straps fold away really nicely too.

It's just been round Europe with me on tour, and was marvellous.

I am always traveling by plane with my bass and I too use the In Case gig bag.

A few ideas:

1. ALWAYS carry your bass to the plane, you may need to gate check it beofore you get on but that way the bass at least made it to the plane while in your possession thus lowering the chances of damage.

2. On bigger planes the gig bag will fit in the overhead compartment. For these flights be there early, get to the gate early and try to be one of the first ones on the plane. This will give you an oportunity to find an empty overhead compartment to put your bass in. If you are towards the middle or last people to get on then it will be hard to find an empty compartment for your bass.

3. If you are on a smaller plane then ask the gate agents if the plane is full. If it is you'll need to gate check your bass right before getting on the plane. If the plane is not full then before you get on ask the stewardess if you can strap your bass into an empty seat. You'll usually have to wait right aoutside the plane door until everyone gets on to make sure there is an empty seat. Then strap your bass in and relax.

4. The most important thing is to be early, be kind, and be patient. Airline personel deal with angry customers all day so telling them "This bass cost more than you make in a month, it has to get on the plane!" usually isn't the best approach. Be kind, be patient and usually you can get the bass on the plane. If not, then you should be OK just checking the bass right beofore you get on the plane.

^ What outstanding advice. Thanks! I've never flown with an instrument, but may have a few opportunities this year. I've talked about this with mentors and comrades many times, and your post was a very eloquent 'greatest hits' of their collective advice.
