Where do you guys get semi rough maple stock; qs, etc. suitable for ripping and planing, primarily for necks?

I'm in south Florida. Not that that matters except we got

do you have a woodcrafters near you? Sometimes they have something that you can work with. Sometimes the wood they carry is laughable. If you just wan tit for necks check Warmoth for neck blanks. Buy a few and cut them up and laminate them or use as is if you want a one piece......t

Go to Woodfinder.com, punch in your ZIP code, and start calling up all the places that aren't called "Woodcraft" or "Rockler". If they sound promising, then jump in your car and go.

And buying blanks from StewMac, etc. is expensive especially if you are still gonna rip them for 3 piece-ers.

Seems like I could get like 40" x 3" x ??? or even 40 x 2 x 2 +/-
in some modest volume. Of course the other problem is H20 %.

Crazy, I can drive about 5 minutes and pick up a wide variety of hardwoods. I would personally order from Larry @ Gallery Hardwoods if it was difficult to get what I wanted locally.

Out of the Woods in Coral Gables, and US Hardwood International, in Miami, also, Segios Exotic Hardwoods in Miami...here's a start for you

You're not searching properly. I just plugged in a south FL zip code and came up with plenty of hardwood dealers. The only way I found an average distance of 1000 miles is by limiting the search to specialty tonewood dealers. That's fine if you're looking for bookmatched exotics for an acoustic guitar, but you said you're just looking for semi rough maple stock. You should be able to get that nearby with no problem. And there are lots of hardwood dealers who aren't on Woodfinder.

If revising your search doesn't help, register at Woodnet (http://www.woodnet.net/forums/) and ask around, you'll get plenty of suggestions.

I typed "Florida Exotic Lumber" into google. Woodfinder was the #1 hit and this was the third:

Most exotic dealers carry a handful of domestics at least.

Also, just scored a bit on the Bay.

for the basics like eastern maple (flar and quarter sawn), alder, and black walnut I usually visit one of the local hardwood shops in Seattle. CrossCuts and Compton's are both great places.

I purchase my quatersawn maple from a local mill Bannish Lumber bannishlumber.com/ located in western mass. They have exceptional quatersawn stock - maple, cherry, poplar, oak. The may ship it to you. It will be rough so you will have to mill it. Purchasing rough stock is better for several reasons - you can let it season, you can rough mill it then let it sit for a while then final thickness mill it. This is the best way to get straight, stable stock/necks.
