I just got a brochure for what's on musically in Brighton next year and this caught my eye.

Apparently the Jazz-loving contemporary ("classical") composer Mark Anthony Turnage has written a showcase piece for Dave Holland called "Bass Inventions".

So this is going to be featured in a concert in February, in my hone town, where Dave Holland will play with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group ( I believe he originally comes from this area?).

I will definitely be going and am glad to see there is more crossover between the Jazz and Orchestral worlds - a highlight for me last year was the concerto which featured drummer Pete Erskine and percussionist Evelyn Glennie. But it's nice to see some Bass getting into the repertoire. :)

Wish I was going. Sounds like a great night ahead.

Well I have tickets for this now - 3rd row back in the middle and it's only next week, so I'm quite excited about it now!

It's getting mentioned in the press over here now, as a significant "World Premiere" .

Here's some links to news items about this "event" :

I see that the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group will be performing the piece again - with Dave Holland - at the Barbican Centre in London - Sunday 19th of January 2003.

I've been searching (unsuccessfully) for a recording of this composition. Anybody know anything?

The concert was great and was one of my musical highlights of the year - I have been searching for a recording ever since - I even asked Dave Holland on his website, that is part of "Jazz Corner" - but got no reply! :(

He usually gets back to you quickly, so he must be pretty busy. I think I might have used his Email though, rather than the Q&A thing.
