My plans so far:

jazz body: alder, front route only, black, tort pickguard, 62 stacked knobs (passive v/t v/t), neck pickup cover ("ashtray")

pickups: nordstrand single coil jazz pickups

bridge: not sure. I'm open to suggestions

neck: maple with rosewood fretboard, "clay" dot inlays, vintage style tuners

main questions:

what would be the best bridge in order to get good sound and keep with the 60s vibe?

am I wasting my time trying to get a 60s sounding jazz bass in a 5 string? I know I could buy other options, but I am actually looking forward to the project.

Hipshot has a vintage style bridge I like the looks of.

I like the hipshot. I know Leo Quann makes great bridges, but (call me stupid), I have issues with the word "BADASS" being on a bass I play at my church. :rollno:

I have used many of the Hipshot Vintage bent plate bridges and absolutely love them. they are the stock bridge on most of the basses I build. they are significantly more solid than the cheaper, thinner bridges made by other manufacturers. the chrome plating is nice and thick ... I've used a couple of them in black, and it appears to be more of a paint job than what I have seen as 'black chrome' that some companies (like Gotoh)produce

for cases where someone is looking for something with a little more 70's luvin', I'll utilize a BAII. quite a few of these installs have been for guys who play in church, and nobody has blown a gasket over it that I know of

all the best,

R

thank you for the feedback. I firmly believe that nobody would notice or if they did would care (I go to a really good church). I just admit to being obsessive (and stupid) about some things. This is one of them. I fault nobody for putting them on a bass. They are excellent products. I might use one anyway when the time comes.

another question: should I shield the pickup and control cavity? I wasn't sure if the original 60s jazzes were shielded or not. I don't want to risk getting rf interference, but wasn't sure what affect shielding had on the tone.

Thank you. that is very helpful. I guess if I shield it, I should go all the way and use star grounding to make sure it is as quiet as possible.

could you clarify that for me? I'm confused by your reply. Are you saying that shielding doesn't matter?

:D

(thanks for all the help)
