Well, you quoted it, so I am not sure if reading issues are present as well.

But just in case I am wrong, why did you feel the need to dig into the original poster? Seing as how a) the auditions haven't happened yet, b) you aren't going.

What do you mean dig into the original poster.....I simply saw the post and commented on it.....When I saw auditions and Vai in the same sentence I wanted to get some more info on it...I did not think about going to his site to get all the info.....Why do you feel the need to dig into what I post?

Playing with Steve and Jeremy last night was a blast. Steve was very factual in saying that "It takes about 1,000 cows to make one hamburger!"

Steve looked at me and said, "OK, can you play over this in 13/8, in A Lydian? I am subdividing this in 12-12-123/12-12-12. Go."

And so, we did. Jeremy, Steve, myself, and some genius Screetch-looking 18 year old guitar phenom from Pittsburgh.

Special thanks to all of the MySpacers and that dude from Belgium that told me about the auditions a only day ahead of time!! :ninja: :ninja:

Back to writing string quartets scored for bass/drums and "prepared Eventide" string quartet.................

About 8 Bass players showed up on Wed and about 10 showed up yesterday for auditions.

That's not very many for an open audition. Must have been intimidated - like most of us on here :) Myself included.

Most of those that auditioned were out of there in 10-15 minutes.

This gig is so totally over my head but..I'm reminded of a night in 1980. I'm playing with Slink Rand in Carbondale Il and Frank and the band show up post gig (mothers day too IINM)
A skinny guy in leather and long multicolored hair comes up and compliments me on my use of feedback on bass. Genuinely too. Later on I put 2+2 together...:cool:

Maybe with a calculator, and pad of paper and a half hour, hahahahaha - I have nightmares that go a little like that.

Does anyone know who got the gig?

I had a drummer roommate many years ago and he did 13/8 15/8 etc with no problem. He was from Turkey and these were just natural rhythms for him.

JTI know what that means, but I probably couldn't do it on the spot. A request like that probably elimates 99% of us, just guessing.

A teacher I had almost 20 years ago in a college jazz combo told me to spend just a few minutes a week playing scales over odd time sigs (5, 7, 10, 11 and 13) because it really streches your ability. After about 2 months of that I could do these odd times routinely. It's not often they're needed, but once in a while the ability to spit this out on a moments notice comes in handy.

Hmm.. 13/8.. thats easy i do that in some jams w/ the death cheaters.

1-2-3-4-5-6, 7-8-9-10-11-12, 1 (repeat) is how i count that and you can give it a ton of feel.. even with 3-4 notes :D

It's not often they're needed, but once in a while the ability to spit this out on a moments notice comes in handy.

Check out Aaron Copland's EDIT:Appalachian Spring sometime. Changes time sig quite frequently. :eek: We played that piece in college and it took some of the folks a bit to get a feel for it.

BTW I believe Vai's "Litte Green Men" is in 13/8. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That sounds awesome! I wish I could have been there, I love odd-time stuff...

I'm wondering, how did Steve treat the people who couldn't handle it? Was he nice, did he give constructive suggestions, or did he just say "you can't cut it, get out!"?
