For sale is a 5-string Steinberger Synapse 5 Bass model XS-15FPA.

http://www.mandroid.com/synapse/synapseside.jpg

Overall this bass is in excellent condition. I actually purchased this as a "blem" model on MusiciansFriend, but I haven't really been able to see what makes it a "blem". There was a note included with the bass from the previous owner, and they said they returned it because they didn't like the sound, and also because of scratches in the backplate ; as far as I can tell, these scratches are actually in the plastic, which neither the previous owner nor I have removed. I don't think the backplate could actually be scratched, but it's possible (I never wanted to take the plastic off so I can't tell for sure). Looking very carefully at it, I have seen a couple of tiny "bumps" in the finish (I've tried to take close up photos of these areas but it's hard to get them to show up). There's one seemingly obvious imperfection in the back of the neck, which you can see in the 4th picture.

For those not familiar with the Synapse line, this model includes a built-in string adaptor so you can use regular strings as well as double-ball strings. The necessary hex tools fit into a little recessed area at the bottom of the bass.

This has a lot of tonal versatility, and lets you blend the magnetic and piezo pickup with each other (or play all magnetic or all piezo).

I like this bass a lot, but I'm just not playing it much (mainly just because I'm not really used to 5 strings much).

More details on the Synapse Bass can be read here:

http://www.steinberger.com/synapsebass.aspx

and at MusiciansFriend:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Steinberger-Synapse-XS15FPA-5String-Bass-Guitar?sku=519148

There's some audio clips of the fretted Synapse Bass at the bottom of this page:

http://www.steinberger.com/multimedia.aspx

This includes a Steinberger Synapse gig bag.

I'm also including a set of Steinberger brand double-ball synapse High C strings. The bass is strung with double-ball low-b strings.

I'm asking for $700 + shipping. I would accept money order or PayPal, but would prefer money order. My eBay ID is Zadillo if you would like to check my feedback (this will be the first instrument I've actually sold).

Let me know if you have any questions, etc.

Thanks, PM replied to.

Just to explain, at this point $700 is probably the lowest I'm willing to go on this bass. Any lower and I'd prefer to just keep it.

Thanks for your interest. If anyone has any questions, just let me know.

Hi,

Yup, this bass is still available. I would really prefer a money order, but PayPal is acceptable.

I hadn't counted on international shipping, so we may need to discuss the cost of shipping internationally, I think.

I've added resized inline photos to this auction, so you don't have to download a bunch of high res photos to see it.

What type of bridge saddle / intonation set-up? Its a little difficult to discern from the photos.

Thanks

A closeup of it here:

http://www.mandroid.com/synapse/originalpics/IMG_0400.JPG

(just in case you're wondering, the white specks in the photo are just dust particles on the bass lit up by the camera flash; I didn't dust it off before taking the photos).

It's a direct drive Steinberger double-ball bridge.

You can also see the piezo saddle there.

Note that it comes with an ebony saddle, but you can also replace it with an aluminum or graphite saddle (available here: http://www.musicyo.com/brandpos.asp?dept_id=3&Series=Synapse%20Parts/Accessories).

These aspects are also described here:

http://www.steinberger.com/synapsebass.aspx

The included hex tools (which fit into the recess underneath it (in the last pic in the original posting) make it easy to adjust intonation, etc.

String spacing at the Bridge? The Specs say TBD. Thanks.

I don't have the equipment to measure this myself, but I found this review on talkbass of the Synapse Bass XS-15PA (the same model as mine, except the review was for a Custom model, which basically just meant an amber finish instead of the black finish of a regular XS-15PA), and they said it had a 17mm string spacing, which sounds about right to me (just based on feel, compared to the string spacing of my Marcus Miller IV Jazz Bass).

This is a nice review btw, if you are looking for someone else's feedback on these Synapse Basses.

I'd be all over this if it were a 4 string...

...and I guess having money would help.

If it were a 4-string, I'd probably be keeping it - I love it, it's just that I'm not really used to playing 5-string.

The main reason I bought it was because it was on sale as a "blem" model, and it was just too good a deal to pass up (I figured I could get used to the 5-string)...... it turned out to be an even better deal when I found that there wasn't really anything "blem" about it, other than possibly a small imperfection in the finish at the back, and that the previous owner had returned it).

But yeah, since it's a 5-string, I'm just not comfortable playing it, so it's for sale.
