Step 1: Be Rocco Prestia
Step 2: Funk
Step 3: Profit!!!

:D :D

In all seriousness though, I suspect a lot of that tone is in the fingers. I can't do it either.

Definitely Rocca's fingers, but that's a typical P-bass with flats sound he had. Not that hard to recreate. Now the playing on the other hand, you're on your own there!

The main difference in Rocco's sound is that he mainly plays with his index finger while muting the strings with the rest of his fingers.

It's tough to learn, and there's definitely a ton of movement, but once you get it down, that sound is sweet!

on his bassday 98 vid he talks about it. For the most part, his ring & pinky finger are muting, while index & middle do the fretting. In that video he isn't doing too much muting. But muting is the key to rocco. Oh yeah, and 16th notes :)

The P bass he typically plays also helps out.

Ah, Rocco is so awesome! I haven't seen that in years....I love it.

Threshar nailed it...mute, ghost, and be happy on the 16ths.
