Is it just me or do you people also get a little irritated when people refer to you as a guitarist? I do and I never call my bass a guitar. I correct people on it too.

I do and I never call my bass a guitar. I correct people on it too. x_Zero_x 05-03-2007, 02:15 AM haha ya.. its annoying.. its right up there on my top 10 most annoying things.. Fat.Mike 05-03-2007, 02:19 AM Better than being called a cello... Well, maybe not but still irritating. James Hart 05-03-2007, 02:19 AM actually our instrument is an "Electric Bass Guitar"... so guitarist isn't as off the mark as you are making it be. "Bass" is a descriptive... Bass Clarinet Bass Drum Bass Guitar the lowest part of the musical range the lowest part in polyphonic music an adult male singer with the lowest voice the lowest adult male singing voice the member with the lowest range of a family of musical instruments having or denoting a low vocal or instrumental range; "a deep voice"; "a bass voice is lower than a baritone voice"; "a bass clarinet" bassybill 05-03-2007, 02:20 AM Welcome, both of you, to the TalkBass bass guitar forums!! :D x_Zero_x 05-03-2007, 02:26 AM BUT if you are referring to a Bassist.. thats a different story.. to say "that bassist plays the bass guitar pretty damn good" thats just being stupid of course he plays bass guitar you dolt.. he wouldnt be a bassist then... Yngwie 4String 05-03-2007, 02:34 AM well if they say BASS guitarist Im OK with that. gkbass13 05-03-2007, 02:36 AM i play bass guitar, but i am a bassist. x_Zero_x 05-03-2007, 02:36 AM im hating all these stereotypes about bass players not being able to play guitar so they play bass Bruce Lindfield 05-03-2007, 02:38 AM Play one of these - see avatar! :p James Hart 05-03-2007, 02:44 AM Play one of these - see avatar! :p looks like that Popsicles stick you use to play grew up nicely Bruce :p Do you still have/play the NS? I just got my first URB a couple weeks back... finally! Bruce Lindfield 05-03-2007, 03:33 AM looks like that Popsicles stick you use to play grew up nicely Bruce :p Do you still have/play the NS? I just got my first URB a couple weeks back... finally! I use both - I quite often play gigs where there is little room and I have to give our pianist a lift as well and then I play the NS CR5. Also - one band I'm in use a rehearsal room in the centre of town where it is impossible to park. It's easy to put the NSCR5 in its special carry case over my shoulder and walk there - but I wouldn't fancy negotiating that same route with a DB! It's also a very hardy (indestructible - survived being hit by a car) spare/replacement - last summer I fell down a couple of steps, dropped the DB and the fingerboard popped off! Easy for somebody who knows how,to repair, but I had to wait a week or two and the NS bass was a good stand-in! James Hart 05-03-2007, 03:44 AM Cool, I've played a couple NS and really enjoyed them. Sorry to hear about that fall.. sounds like my kind of luck. cutthroatmolloy 05-03-2007, 11:20 AM ive never been refered to as a guitarist, as far as ive known... most people say either im a bassist. or that guy from that pirate band. Fassa Albrecht 05-03-2007, 03:08 PM I've always called a bassist a bassist and a guitarist a guitarist. They're two seperate disciplines and two seperate instruments. But one of my pet peeves is being called a guitarist. Problem is when i correct people I usually get called pretentious....:crying: :bassist: IanStephenson 05-03-2007, 06:04 PM If this is the most stressfull thing in your life right now, then you really need to start appreciating how good things are for you... People have turned up to your gig, and listened to you playing. Personally I don't care any more than they tell me they had a good night. Seriously - get some perspective. If this bugs you, then you're going to be having heart problems by the time you're 40... learn to chill a bit. Ian buliwyfff 05-03-2007, 08:53 PM I dont mind being called a guitarist I think a lot of times they know the difference and still call it a guitar, who cares IconBasser 05-03-2007, 09:12 PM im hating all these stereotypes about bass players not being able to play guitar so they play bass lol I suck balls at guitar. I can play just as fast as any guitarist though, just on bass. P.S. I started on bass. Sean S 05-03-2007, 09:19 PM i just roll with it :smug: I just know better ;) x_Zero_x 05-03-2007, 09:23 PM i think its more of an ignorance thing.. people are too lazy to figure it out.. and to some ignorance is bliss to others it can be annoying James Hart 05-03-2007, 10:12 PM i think its more of an ignorance thing.. people are too lazy to figure it out.. and to some ignorance is bliss to others it can be annoying no it's more of an irrelevance thing... just because someone doesn't know something doesn't mean they are lazy. I know people that never even listen to music... ever! Someone like that or even the casual radio listener, why should they care what a bass guitar is (or let alone any instrument). AlphaMale 05-04-2007, 01:53 AM I dont' really care anymore I just go along with it.And about the bassists who couldn't play guitar thing I've actually met two bassists who couldn't play bass and started playing guitar haha as opposed to doing what McCartney and Lemmy did mat gregory 05-04-2007, 02:02 AM it bugs me that you people think about this thing way too much!!! Yngwie 4String 05-04-2007, 12:51 PM One time my guitarist was showing off playing Erruption. I showed him the bass line for YYZ and handed him my bass. He wouldnt even try it. PWNAGE!! StanFan 05-04-2007, 03:07 PM I get this quite a bit, but usually it's from my grandma so i'll let it slide. I will correct some people, but sometimes it's not worth the effort. It's rather foolish to get offended by such a thing. MikeRS 05-05-2007, 04:20 PM I don't mind what I'm called, but I was incorrectly called a guitarist in a newspaper interview, even though I never played guitar and have no plans on playing it seriously. This resulted in people in my hometown trying to get me to play gigs as a lead guitarist or rhythm guitarist or as a soloist, and when I told them that I was really bass, they just said "oh" and hung up the phone or walked away. Fortunately, by also playing the piano, I can get a few more solo gigs to make up for it. bobba66 05-05-2007, 04:22 PM No problem. Life's too short to worry about stuff like that. jaaboy 05-05-2007, 07:05 PM i prefer being called a guitarist. B/c i confuses the heck outa ppl. Them: What do you play? Me: Guitar Them: Oh...so wait theres 3 guitarists in your band? (i have a rythm and a lead guy) Me: Yep T: what about the bass? M: i play bass T: I thought you played guitar? M: I do then it goes on with the best of abbot and costello for a while. Or this is always a funny one Them: Dude this song:"Insert extremely hard mainstream guitar solo crazy song ie Hanger 18" is soooo hard to play! Can you play it? Me: Yep. THem: Reallly??! Me: Yea its not that hard Them:  But once i did get called a guitarist by our school news paper, and that did make me a little annoyed, surprizingly. Eli_Upright12 05-05-2007, 07:23 PM I play Bass guitar, guitar and Double Bass, so I cant be complaining about being called anything except a cellist. I think we Double Bassist take it worst of anyone just because we get the "dont you wish you chose flute" jokes and other berating remarks about size and people generally dont know the difference between a Cello and a Double Bass, but all you really can do in the end is just politely say " Actually Ma'am or Sir its a bass guitar/Double Bass, but we prefer to call ourselves bassists. quasiz_bassist 05-06-2007, 11:49 AM yeah my friend, a guitarist, calls bass "guitar for retards" we had a boxing match after that, i chipped his tooth.
