So i play in a modern rock band, we play stuff that sounds like everything from Dave Matthews to Gym Class Heros to Story of the Year. Today i come home and for some reason had that calling to pick up my baby and learn what??..... Avenged Sevenfold!?!? where the $%@# did that come from. All of a sudden here i am, just rockin away, realizing "whoa! that's a sweet lick how can i use that?" and then i thought, hmmmm... pop rock + avenged sevenfold influences. Just curious if anyone else plays stuff that contradicts what they like to practice

Welcome open mindedness and other forms of music. It usually happens somewhere between the ages of 20 and 30.
But also, some songs that aren't fun to listen to are fun to play and some songs that aren't fun to play are fun to listen to.

Did you see that last interview with Cliff Burton in Bass Guitar? He talked about how he never listened to other thrash bands and loved REM. This was in early 87 before anybody heard of REM. Half my collection is metal. My band does some country songs that I think are a lot of fun to play. They're actually quite enjoyable to listen to too.
