i'm also in the market for one. i'm looking at the M-Audio 61es. My buddies got the 88 key version and it's a nice board.

i dont really see 3 octaves as enough tbh.
you could try an m-audio, they seem like quite a good package.

MAudio Radium 49 or 61. i use those when i need more than octaves my Ozone. i would also try looking at non-USB controllers and getting a MIDI interface such as the Edirol UM series. just in case you dont like any of the USB controllers.

if it were me I'd go for the M-audio one that's 88 keys. I'd never settle to buy anything less than standard size w/ 88 keys and at least a sustain pedal, but that's maybe because I'm primarily a classical pianist, recording/ bass player 2nd.

so all those fancy buttons up the Novation aren't really worth it ?

That depends on what you're doing with it. If you need the range and abilities of a piano, then you're better off getting an 88-key deal. If you've got synths with a lot of parameters that want tweaking, then you'll want to have the knobs and sliders.
