I'm in the middle of putting together a rather extensive 3month woodshedding schedule for the summer holidays together - part of this is to learn at least 4 new jazz standards a week....

SO...I need a list of about 30 ABSOLUTE MUST KNOW jazz standards - tunes that always get called, that are used for other tunes etc etc. What tunes should every jazz bassist know inside out and be ashamed if they don't know!

Answers on a post please!!

Thanks

^^ hello mister keiretsu, nice to see a recognizable 'face', I post on DOA quite allot too and I notice that you, or one of your lot is there frequently as well.

I post under the name ill harmonix, very stupid username, yes :)

anyway, my 2c

Ive got you under my skin
At Last
The Girl From Ipanema
Have you met miss jones
I get a kick out of you
so in love
lady is a tramp
lullaby of broadway
moondance
my funny valentine
night and day
so in love
get happy

they are all vocal standards, and im sure the more experienced peeps will add to that list tenfold, but there ones that are often called in my experience!

This is a good list in my opinion. I would add these too:

Summertime
Body and Soul
I'll Remember April
But not for Me
There is No Greater Love
There Will Never be Another You
Bye Bye Blackbird
Have You Met Miss Jones
You Don't Know What Love Is
What is This Thing Called Love
My Funny Valentine
Softly as in a Morning Sunrise
Girl From Ipanema
Stella by Starlight
In a Sentimental Mood
In a Mellow Tone
Doxy

A couple of these are a little tricky (Stella, Ipanema, You Don't Know What Love Is, Miss Jones bridge) but at some point people will be horrified if you don't know them. I wouldn't worry too much about the singer tunes that someone else posted because singers are almost always amateurs so their expectations for you are low. And there's a good chance they'll have a book anyway. Just learn Summertime, My Funny Valentine, and Route 66 (just a blues) and you'll be ready for almost any singer that sits in.

Chris Fitzgerald has a great list on his website. He will gladly email it to you if you ask nicely.

Simple answer - go visit jazzstandards.com. Not only a nice big list of tunes but background on the composer(s) and the tune itself. I've found it to be an indispensible resource.
