not hearing of the minutemen is only showing me your lack of interest in listening to other bands besides the garbage im sure youve been listening to for, what, 15, 20 years, take your oldie garbage somewhere else, you should buy all the minutemen cds you can, theyre the only band with a real rythym section. i mentioned them because no one else did, im tired of seeing 30 or 40 people post the same damn names up and say how great the same people are over and over and at the same time never recognize people that played in the late 70s early 80s underground punk, yes punk, before it got all stale and messed up, scene. thats real music, not doing it for money or some other commercial reason.

Yeah Jim I was gettin' ready to flame you for those lame choices but the Qintar beat me to it. http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/wink.gif Now that I think of it, my choices are really lame, just a bunch of lame jazzers and blues men. I'm gonna run out and buy every "minutemn" [sic] CD I can find so I can hear what a real rythym section sounds like. I must be especially lame because I've never even heard of the "minutemn".

Qintar, calm down there man.. telling people to "take their oldie garbage somewhere else" isn't going to win you any converts.
That said, Watt and Hurley were as dynamic as ANY jazz rhythm section. If, like MM back there, you've never listened to the Minutemen, you should.. "Double Nickels on the Dime" is all you need. Those guys were punk, funk, jazz and rock all rolled into one, and the interplay between the instruments rivals the best jazz combos.. take it from me, I've listened to both sides.

Being the curious type I have to ask: do you remember the original question?

Hi guys just wanted to know if any of you have a favorite rythym section bass & drum duo

I think the "you" in the post refers to anyone who answers. If someone has a personal favorite why would that put a bug up your a$$? http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Just curious. I wouldn't call your choices lame, they're just your choices. Did we miss something?

Brad Johnson
07-27-2000, 02:29 AM
BTW the only reason I didn't list any 70's/80's punk rhythm sections was because I hadn't heard any that truly moved me. Go figure http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

gweimer
07-27-2000, 06:27 AM
I also wouldn't call Powerman 5000 a lack of willingness to listen to anything new. Even the guys in Minutemen ( I may have to check them out someday) would list "their favorites" as people they grew up admiring, so lighten up. Chances are, Qintar, when you reach middle-age, you'll be ranting at young whelps like yourself that The Minutemen were far better than the "new junk kids listen to today". No need to get emotional on a personal preference thread.

JimK
07-27-2000, 05:53 PM
I has nothing to do with "middle age"
...the thing is-
I wasn't into any(?)of the guys I mentioned back when I was 16. As you continue to play & learn, hopefully, some "growth" will be a by-product. After all, none of us still read Mother Goose, right?
Back then, I loved John Paul Jones...I still do; IMO, he was jamming/improv-ing those lines. Thirty years later, one can still hear JPJ playing with an edge.
I've done a little listening & studying...so as I played & learned, I went back & investigated who the "masters" might be. Take, for example, Jimmy Blanton; damn, he played(albeit briefly)in '39-'41...I ain't that damn old! http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
The point is, & Brad had a nice post about lineage(somewhere),...trace BACK into time to "discover" who influenced the guys you dig TODAY. There's a wealth of education/music along the way. A lotta guys at this site talk about being "in a box"; S***, they're putting themselves in there! http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/wink.gif

Qintar-
If you're into Punk, good...find the "best" & asks yourself what makes that someone the "best". That's cool.
Personally, Punk never floated my boat; rhythmically, it never moved me to search into it. So what! By the same token, I don't really expect you to like all the Free/Avant garde S*** I'm into, either. It's no biggie.

...meanwhile, I think I'm gonna go back & re-read the Mike Watt(cover)of BASS PLAYER mag.
Hasta...

So the Minutemen are from the late '70's-early '80's? Since this is 2000 doesn't that make them 20 years old. So aren't you listening to oldies? So what's your point?

I'd have to go with Tony Levin and Bill Bruford/Jerry Marotta, with King Crimson and Peter Gabriel respectively. TLev is one of the best bass players out there because he can play comparatively simple yet completely non-obvious lines that complement the music perfectly. In the dense mixes that characterized '80s Crimson and pretty much everything Gabriel's ever done, his tone and his style are perfect. Bill Bruford and Jerry Marotta are also the only two drummers I can think of who can get your butt moving in an odd time signature.

Great Job Guy's! This thread really took off Im glad to see about 98% of us are really open minded about the music we listen to. Theres alot of awesome choices, some I have heard of others I have not but Im not going to bash anyones choices, if anything Im going to go out and get some of this music I never heard of after all aint the discovery of something new or old part of the enjoyment. Hell im 37 yrs young and whats in my cd changer right now is Johnny Cash American Recordings, Best of Atlanta Rythym Section, Chilipeppers Califoniacation, Sevendust, Stanley Clark School days, Devo greatest hits. Point being give everything a good listen not everything old is outdated and lame i find that something I wasn't into 15 yrs ago is new and refreshing today. Thanx for all the responce.....

It was great hanging with them. My drummer got a picture taken with Ritchie and my guitar player( who works at a camera store) got it blown up for him for an Xmas present. The gig was a couple of years ago and to this day it was one of the best experiences of my musical career. For 2 nights in a row we got to watch some serious jamming. The first night from right behind Ritchie's kit and the second night from the mixing booth.

*The Stax rhythm section (aka Booker T. and the MGs)
*The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding)
*Band of Gypsys (Billy Cox and Buddy Miles)
*Miles Davis's section on Kind of Blue (Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb, Bill Evans)

Sebastian Steinberg and Yuval Gabay from the now defunct Soul Coughing. Never was there a fatter groove than the loop that propels "Screenwriter's Blues."

Melvin Gibbs and Ronald Shannon Jackson. Was there ever a stranger conceptualist on drums than RSJ? Musical and odd. Oddly musical. Their work in the incarnation of The Decoding Society that featured a second bassist, Reverend Bruce Johnson, and a pre-Living Color Vernon Reid on guitar was amazing, but their free jazz meets rock power trio ensemble Power Tools was for me the apex.

Chris Squire and Bruford of Yes. "Heart of the Sunrise" particularly.

The cats in Red Snapper, whose names escape me at the moment. "Suckerpunch" on Making Bones just slams.

Marcus Miller and Al Foster on Miles' The Man with the Horn. "Fat Time" is one of the slinkiest, most insinuous tunes ever. It builds and builds.

As does the long tune that opens the Weather Report LP where Victor Bailey and Omar Hakim made their debut (Initiation? Is that the title? It's one of the only WR titles I can't seem to find on CD). Such a different sounding rhythm section from Jaco/Erskine--less lean and clean, more loose and muscular--but such worthy successors.

Michael Walden and Ralphe Armstrong from the much maligned Visions of the Emerald Beyond era of Mahavishnu Orchestra. Narada Michael Walden created one of the most distinctive acoustic drum sounds I've ever heard.

Melvin Gibbs/Sim Cain (I would love to hear earlier/later Gibbs stuff if I could find it)

RHCP
James Brown's rhythm sections - all of 'em
Tori Amos' live band (no names to hand at the moment)

Best rythym section would have to be Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford for Rage Against the Machine. Not only does Tim lay down some of the most powerful and hard bass lines but hes got the main man Brad just beating the Sh*t out of the set. These guys used to really rock together.

No one has mentioned Aston "Family Man" Barrett and his brother Carley: Bob Marley's rhythm section.

Sly and Robbie, definitely.

Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz.

I saw Omar Hakim and Victor Bailey in about 1982, and they blew me away.

Sade's rhythm section; Paul S. Denman and ?

Tony Levin and Manu Katche.

You gotta start somewhere, and these guys saw one hell of alot of crazy gigs and situations. Thru it all they continued to deliver for decades.

Not Flashy. Simple? Sure. But to the point, concise, and just enough to make tons of great Rock 'n' Roll.

You're gonna laugh, but they got ALL the money.

Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts. DUH!

i have to make an observation here

since all good music is built around the rhythm section (from j.s. bach to gangster rap)
it therefore follows that EVERY decent, popular band of ANY genre MUST have a good rhythm section, or it would not be popular and therefore included in this thread.
So this thread is basically another "whats your favourite band " thread

sorry, but it is

:bassist: I am sure I will here it for a few of these, but the top 5 that have influenced me are:

1. Les Claypool and Tim Alexander. They're dead on with each other even when they are just jamming around.
2. Alex Katunich and Jose Pasillas 3rd. They were the most technical funk rock rythm section I have ever heard.
3. Sam Rivers and John Otto. They matched each others intensity on their instruments very well.
4. Geddy Lee and Neil Peart. They inspired more "Greats" then i think any other rythm section has. Ever.
5. John Paul Jones and John Bonham. Except for these guys.

Now, I know I will most likely be attacked by the "Bass by the Book" snobs for mentioning Claypool, and be shredded by the close minded old school thumpers for mentioning Limp Bizkit. So, in a premtaure response, I will say this: Shut up. If you were to strip everything away from Primus and Limp Bizkit and just listen to the bass and drums you would understand that the amount of writing, organizing, and technical mastery that is involved with what they do could rival ANY of the greats that came before them. And don't say its because of my generation that I don't know any better because I have Rush and Zepplin on my list as well. :bassist:

I've seen Bill Bruford's name mentioned a lot, but I think my favorite bassist with him was Jeff Berlin...not to take anything away from Tony or John Wetton (that would be foolish) I saw Bill & Jeff together a few times and left thinking that I had seen the best.
