B.Hendrix 07-31-2000, 10:40 PM loudfunk - GREAT list guy!!! Glad to see you included Adam Nitti - got a chance to see him last week at a local MARS. He was playing with with a Jazz fusion trio - he absolutely tore-up his custom curbow 6 string. Very wooten-like, but still a monster in his own right! Anything on his "Liquid Blue" disc will put a smile http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/biggrin.gif on your face!

I abhor Manson but,"Dope show" is actually a cool song. It reminds me of Dio and the Scorpions with the 4 to the bar feel. <p>
My favorite solo bass artist is Marcus Miller. Expand your mind, Downcaster. Don't just listen to popular music. (Yes, Manson is popular)
I.'.I.'.Nakoa 09-06-2000, 04:53 PM My favorite bass players have all been narrowed down to Yngwie Malmsteen. Hes basically the only reason and influence I have on bass. Oh yeah, i also like Marcus Miller..
Edited for: Stupidity, typos, horrible spelling/grammar/punctuation, and shortened for bandwith.

Killer man...to be able to write the music he does, to play and sing what he does? Who cares if he sounded like a girl. Amazing man. Simply amazing.

You find Patitucci's jazzy upper register solos "pornoesque"? Explain, please. I haven't heard anything that good in a John Holmes film.
mcbassdude 05-18-2003, 09:41 PM Helmutt Hattler of Kraan is simply awesome. Squire's tone in a jazz funk fusion thang. I highly recommend anyone who has not heard him to take the time and find the music.
Chris Squire. Such tone, wonderful counter melody, great time.
Jaco - heavy heavy sigh....
Bootsy. Makin the Bass the life of the par-tay!
Kool of Kool and the Gang - Jungle Boogie, Hollywood Swinging, Get down on it.. Infectious Grooves indeed.
Larry Graham - Makin the bottom move.
Glenn Hughes - The "Burn" album slayed me. He's got a bit o' the funk in him.
John Paul Jones - I don't think any other bassist is emulated more than this guy, whether players know it or not!
DaM13N 05-18-2003, 11:54 PM Rachel Bolan of Skid Row
Duff "Rose" McKagan of Guns n' Roses
Jerry Dixon of Warrant
Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue
Jason Newsted of Ozzy Osbourne
OiBass 05-19-2003, 08:35 AM Hey-If we're talkin' "killer bass players"
what about Sid Vicious? (well- he was charged
with being a killer- he didn't live long enough
for the trial).
Coypu 05-19-2003, 11:58 AM http://medieteknik.bth.se/joba01/overview.html - Has plenty of good bassplayers and soundclips are included for all of them.
cassanova 05-19-2003, 10:43 PM Theres a whole FAQ thread of killer bassists, take a peek in there too.

Blueszilla 05-22-2003, 10:36 AM Roscoe Beck
Kenny Gradney
Any bassist whoever played with Miles...
jazzbo 05-22-2003, 02:18 PM My dear sweet GOD! I cannot fathom how we're on page 3 of this thread and no one, absolutely nobody, has mentioned, the greatest bass player of all time....
Mr. James Jamerson
parrott 05-22-2003, 03:45 PM *I* can't believe that no-one's mentioned the time difference in the second page of this thread, the first being from 2000!!!
What's with all this digging up of old threads?
Anyway, I say Barry Adamson.
Ryan Berry 05-22-2003, 03:53 PM Most of my suggestions have been taken so I'll suggest:
The bassist for Cake(i cant remember his name)
Stephen Lessard of The Dave Matthews Band
Omar Rodriguez of Defacto
Hub of The Roots
Joe Lally of Fugazi
Tony Kanal of No Doubt
None of these guys are virtuosos but I dig their style.

CAKE basslines rock, however no two CD's are the same guy. They go thru bassists like beer thru my blatter!
Peace
Ryan Berry 05-22-2003, 05:04 PM I know they've had a few, but they all sound good to me.
sharp_19 05-27-2003, 08:01 AM I actually think fieldy is pretty good, (in reference to a previous post) his style, sound and tone is pretty unique.
IAMERICCOCHRANE 05-27-2003, 01:38 PM Any Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool and Marcus Miller song will more than likely make your jaw hit the floor.
dooberheim 05-28-2003, 07:31 AM Aother couple of great bassists IMO:
Scott Thunes (later Zappa)
Bryan Beller (Beer for Dolphins, etc.)
Both of them are pretty much tools of the composer (they don't generally do a lot of solo stuff) but they have to play the most god-awful complicated stuff and make it look easy. Worth checking out...
DK
WannaBeBurton 05-28-2003, 07:56 AM Cliff Burton was the best bassist of all time.
some good ones around today are:
Justin Chancellor(tool)
Stew Hamm (primus)
Flea (red hott chillie peppers)
Bo Bradley 05-28-2003, 03:42 PM Mike Pope- He is one of the most harmonically sophisticated players ive ever heard.

OK.. Cliff may be your favourite bassplayer of all time, but let's get something clear:
STU Hamm does not play in primus (Les Claypool does. Stuart Hamm plays with Joe Satriani, he has played with Steve Vai, and is a solo bassist.
And you have some serious spelling problems.
Mental Octopus 05-28-2003, 07:52 PM Flea!!
Blood Sugar Sex Magik and One Hot Minute are awesome bass albums

Chudweiser 06-08-2003, 01:02 AM maybe this should go in the "most under-rated bass player" thread, but I think that Skuli Sverrison is one of the most talented guys out there. His tone is amazing, his time is unfaltering, and he has ridiculous solo chops which never overlap the song. Check him out on Ben Monder's "Excavation", Track No. 3 bass solo.
DEVILMAN 06-09-2003, 03:11 AM Boy, old thread, not to repeat any greats already listed so I'll leave mine at Andrew Weiss(Rollins, Gone, Ween), he can solo out & jump right back into the groove like he was never there! Killer sound too...
later,
~S~
Matt R Miller 06-13-2003, 10:56 AM mike gordon
david schools
phil lesh
les claypool
ryan stasik
Tyler Hole 06-13-2003, 12:17 PM Any Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool and Marcus Miller song will more than likely make your jaw hit the floor.
Victor, Jaco and Les! Hell yeah! Classical Thump by Victor Wooten, that is one sweeeeeeeeeeeeet song! Gotta get that one.
bottlefight 06-13-2003, 06:41 PM A band that sounds like infectious grooves is downtown brown www.dtbmusic.com they are one of my favorite bands.
The guy from rancid name is Matt freedman. He is basically a guitar player who picked up a bass. The maxwell murder solo sounds impressive till you learn it.
Wrong Robot 06-16-2003, 02:36 AM Classical thump isn't that sweet....it's kind of...dull.
I don't know, the bass playing is killer, but hte song just doesn't do it for me.
The Antipop 06-21-2003, 12:09 PM what about Chris Wood?
wait isn't that my name?
yes sir, it is....
seriously check him out anyways
lollapalooza 06-21-2003, 07:50 PM 1. Michael Balzary (aka Flea)
2. John Entwistle - The Who
3. Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath
Geezer is so overlooked as a bassist. His riffs are pretty simple in comparison to some, but they're so funky! :bassist:
